I will say that without EQ on flat settings bass is very present on the MH1C, the reason I bring up EQ is due to the fact your gonna want less bass presents with certain situations/genre. Otherwise I and others and can attest that the MH1C offer plenty of detail, sound stage, bass and clarity in the highs in reference to female vocals or anthony green leading. I invite you to take a look at some of the forums expressly dedicated to the sony's. Some people have alluded to them surpassing if not being on par with the R-50 in a number of ways (again subjective), others further still have gone on to say they rival a number of other IEM's they've either had or a/b tested two to three times their price bracket. Either way for 25-30 (last I heard the price had gone up from the 20 I spent on them) your gonna be very pleased until you decide you wanna drop 200-300 dollars on C/IEM's. Either way good luck, with black friday and cyber monday right around the corner I'm SURE you'll come across something to make you pull the trigger, till then do a LOT of reading :p

The Sony MH1C aren't bad for $30 and you certainly can do a lot worse spending a lot more. I find the highs present with good detail, but somewhat rolled off to my ears. The bass is tight, but I find it somewhat elevated, though not annoyingly so. Very listenable for my tastes, but I'm not yet as impressed as some have been. I may need to try some foam tips to see if that improves their sound and fit for me. No question, a great value at their price.

If you are looking for accuracy and detail, and don't need "chest-thumping bass" then I'd definitely consider the Etymotic HF5 -- especially as right now on Amazon in Cobalt (color) for $100. You aren't going to be able to hear much around you compared to many other IEMs out there, so that may be a problem when you're walking around. On the other hand, the detail far exceeds what I've heard from other $100-200 range IEMs. You may not want to hear that much detail; they are unforgiving of poor quality sources and recordings.
