I got rid of my KEF M500. I initially liked it as well as the build quality, but the mid-range bothered me. It was a little too peaky.

Plus, it was such a nice headphone that I was afraid of using and damaging it (if that makes sense!), haha. It was mostly in its case and I grabbed my KSC75 over them most of the time.

I found the mid-range a little over-emphasized.

The M200's sound amazing. But sadly they just do not stay in my ears.

I'd strongly recommend removing the ear hooks. They stay in place much better with them off.

I noticed that the aluminum portions of the earhooks are hollow, creating a sound cavity behind the drivers. Has anyone mentioned if the tuning is affected once the earhooks are removed?

They fit me just fine as-is. But I can see where the ear guides would get annoying AF for some people.

I think the reason the ear guides are there in the 1st place is because the main shells are big and fairly heavy, which could cause them to fall out for some people.

Well, I decided to go for it. I didn’t like the ear guides, and I definitely didn’t like the frustrating and annoying tangly-jangly stock cable.

Step 1 was to take the shells apart, and figure out how the drivers were wired (in parallel, in series, does it have a crossover or not, etc).




Step 2 was to remove the ear guides. Once I cut off the ear guides, I turned the shells on a makeshift lathe to make them perfectly round. I planned on sand-blasting the finish on the sides of the shells so it looked exactly like the stock finish. But I decided to just put a satin brushed finish on the sides.






Step 3 will be to add the mmcx jacks and put it all back together, which I still need to do. But here’s the starting point...

I definitely can’t take credit for the original idea though. Whoever was the 1st to cut off the ear guide (that I stole the idea from) deserves a beer!!

They are surprisingly easy to take apart and work on. Which is always appreciated by modders, as some IEMs basically self-destruct when you try and work on them.
