So to answer your question, no, the K701 is not a perfect set of cans... But it is quite neutral, and has plenty of resolution.

This reasoning would make the Yamaha NS10 the perfect pair of speakers as they are the most wide-spread set of speakers in studios (all have something else aswell but these are a reference) all over the world, yet they pretty much suck.

All of my headphones were perfect until I found the next one that was "more" perfect, then the next one that was more perfect than that, and now the same headphones are all flawed - how does that happen?

To me, K701 is the most balanced headphone I have ever heard. It is very good at everything, but not the absolute best in any area.

It doesn't have the midrange of W2002, the bass of HD650, the attack/impact of a Grado. It does have a very good midrange, very good treble, very good detail, very good bass, and very good soundstage.

So I think that K701 is really the jack of all trades and is unique in that it does not have a flaw that jumps out at you. The closest thing to a flaw is the midbass level which is probably closer to correct than some people enjoy hearing.

The only catch is that I think they might sound boring to some people. They don't have something that comes out and grabs you as much as the other high end headphones, in my opinion.

Well, mine is waiting in the mail room downstairs so I suppose I should get down there pretty quick and get them on my head...

Fast delivery. Mine are coming today, supposedly.

I have my pink noise CD ready so I can make this a fast and easy burn-in. Although some like listening to their earphones as they mature, I want them to sound good, fast.

I love the look of the K701s... They have the least amount of flaws out of any cans that I've owned before. (Nothing $2000 or over)

For only the amount I paid for them, they compare very favorably to:
K1000
HD650
PS-1
Old DT880s
UE-10 Pros

If I had to own just one set of cans for the rest of my life it would be a toss-up between the K1000s and the K701s... and for a sub $500 can, that's saying a lot.

Nah they don't suck. They just have a super flat sound.

Anyways, I have DT880s and am still relatively new to this whole business though it is fascinating. I have heard the 701s, and I personally thought that they were a little dull (as in not too exciting, despite having superior sound quality/resolution and very, very good clarity [BTW, this is in general, i'm not comparing these to my dt's, which cost $200, lol). Anyhow, what do you guys think can compare to the AKG 701's? I know that all brands have a general "type" of sound, like Grados, Audio Technica, etc. But overall, what compares? And with a good amp, what defeats?

The K701 is great.

Just wish they had more of the tone edge resolution of the SA5000 - sometimes the K701 tones are slightly muddy and blurred compared to the SA5000 (with the same music).

They don't have the problems of the SA5000 though.

90% of people will prefer the K701 to the SA5000.

It is my best single headphone recommendation to others.
