Just finished the Accoustic foam ear baffles. Phew, my ear isn't touching the driver anymore. Still tweaking it...

LOL!

Yeah...that is something I am hearing on more and more recordings thanks to the extension on these....lots of sub-bass noise.....

Hey Kids!

I completed my third set of modified T50RP's in 4 hours.  That's fast for me.  I experimented endlessly with my first set, taking them apart and making minute changes X ~ 40 mods.  I learned a lot.

My second set I made and posted 2 days ago was modeled after mrspeakers' Rastapants.  I am impressed with their SQ, bass extension, and general frequency response from top to bottom.  mrspeakers is correct about the potential benefits of removing the white felt from the rear of the drivers as long as you tune the bass ports.  Rastapants are more efficient than stock as I described in my Mod Squad summary.  As I listened today and compared my Rastapants to my first modified set and a stock set, I noticed that the my Rastapants mids are a bit veiled and the highs are not as crisp as the comparison sets.  I stopped by an art supply shop to look for various modding supplies and came across a brand new material never before described in this forum.  I bought 3 yards which is enough for 100 mods.

Continuing with the "Pants" theme, I introduce... "BlueMonkeyFlyer Pants" (BMF's) !!

I compared my BMF's to my first modified set, my Rastapants set, and a stock set of T50RP's.  BMF's are a bit more efficient than my Rastapants by 3 dB that are more efficient than my first mod and stock T50RP's by ~ 5 dB.  What is really exciting to me is that the veil over the vocals is gone, the bass is just as deep and textured as my Rastapants, and the treble is more prominent without fatigue.  These are incredible, IMHO.

Here's what I did:

A brand new pair of T50RP's about to be "measured" for a new pair of BlueMonkeyFlyer Pants.

The stock white rear driver felt has just been removed with acetone.

Here you can see the baffle is mass loaded with Claytoons Plasticine, the "secret sauce" applied over the entire rear surface of the driver, and a 1 mm X 1 cm clear plastic reflex dot over the center grid to add BMF spice to the secret sauce.

I lined the cups with one layer of Akasa Paxmate Plus.  I wish I were as manually dexterous as Flysweep. Check out his beautiful work a few posts earlier in this thread!

Note that I left the stock black, bass port dampening felt in place.

Here's a close-up of the most significant BMF mods: The "secret sauce" capped with a reflex dot = Deep, fast, textured bass; clear mids; very good treble.

I plan to try some additional mods to my new BMF pants involving the bass ports, the ear side of the baffles, and Shure 840 ear pads.  And later?   Who knows?

Haha....just a doctor of love....

In all seriousness...no...just a lowly mastering engineer and audio restoration specialist...

I only monkey with my monkey anyway....

Excellent work bluemonkeyflyer.. do share with us your secret sauce ( despite it not being as cute as LFF's secret sauce

..as far as the name, I was thinking "FlyingMonkeyPants".. that just sounds fantabulous.

FlyingMonkeyPants. FMP's. Hmmm, maybe not the best abbreviated moniker, though.

Maybe I'll go with BlueMonkeyFlyer Pants. BMF Pants! Yeah. That's the ticket! LOL

And it's more prominent on the left side - like my heart is pounding on my left dogear... I wonder what was happening that day during the recording

I thought I had the same guts inside all three and had only changed the pads, but they were each in different locations on different amps.  For grins I decided to A/B/C them and also to rotate the pads and discovered one unit sounded markedly better with all three pads.  Faster, clearer lower mids.  I have to inspect for subtle differences this weekend.  Too happy listening to the O2 pads on the best of breed.

Also, have two new mods up my sleeves.  Rastapants Plus...
