I'm thinking of buying one of these to add to my collection. Is the ortho sound all that different, I've only heard dynamics.

I know it has a fairly flat response, that won't bother me. And I doubt I'm going to mod these.

Orthos headphones are faster, smoother and have incomparable mids and bass. Vocals are particularly realistic. Distrortion is lower as well.
Othos are very sensible to the structure that's why you have a lot of mods.

Can anyone say that having wood cups improved sound quality, or is damping enough?

I'm trying to work my way through this thread right now and just read this last night, post 449 & 450:

In stock form you'll only get a small glimpse at what they're really capable of. Gains with mods can range from modest to phenomenal. As they come, they're just a decent $75 phone with a crapload of potential. The drivers in them are world class.

I'll post my two cents here, i've been following this thread for a while now... A few months ago i stumbled upon an image of a pair of Smeggy's Thunderpants, I thought to myself man i wish i could build something like that!!!    Upon further digging i found that Smeggy was gracious enough to reveal the basic plans for them. I planned out and built my own pair with lots of help from him and others on the thunderpants thread.

When i ordered my t50's, I listened to them for a few days completely stock and found them rather dull and not to my liking, the mids were nice but thats where it ended (this might be attributed to my amp, which was the asgard at the time) ... So i hacked the drivers out of them and put together my thunderpants, this took many hours of tweeking and running to random stores for odd parts. In the end, the result was a beautiful woodied T50rp. Beyond that it was a complete transformation in sonic characteristic compared to the stock configuration of the t50rp driver. You can eat the bass with a fork, the detailed creamy mids will put you into a trance, and the resolution of the treb keeps you engaged. And best of all it is all there in ONE package!!!  These cans didnt shine until i drove them via a hybrid amp with gobs of current, thus if you have access to such amp it should pair nicely. I didnt like them with the valhalla either so im not sure a pure tube amp will do them justice either, they really like some push...

To put things into perspective, im selling my hd600 due to these modded t50 drivers

There is so much potential here, dont rule them out and keep tweaking your design as you will be rewarded! Ortho drivers respond very well to damping and tweaking so have at it!  Or talk to ^ about a pair

I just got some Paxmate for free from someone on this forum (this is why I love this place), and the only noble thing for me to do is to pass the goodness on.

I will probably be "done" with my T50-RP mods soon (once I get the Paxmate and my earpads), and should have some dynamat left.  I can mail some out so that you can damp the cups with them.

If anyone wants some, please PM me, I will see if I have enough.  Note that it may take me a while before I have time to send it out though, work is busy lately.

same here, I'll probably have extra, but I've been too busy to even open up the t50rps

Up to page 43. I had planned on maybe reading more of the thread but took the cups apart to undo some of the dampening. One of the wires to the drivers came loose when I was digging around removing some of the felt I had put in previously. So I had to resolder it, All is good despite my two left thumbs and my lack of soldering skills. Anyway they dont sound as congested as they did. They look like this now.

I took all the felt out of the center, on the sides and removed some dynamat that was on that center plastic piece. Just a little on the top of it now  Also I poked some indentations in the blue tak with jewlers Phillips head. The mod with the micropore tape and transpore tape looks interesting. I think I'm going trade out that green felt for lighter felt and incorporate some electrical tape somehow in the cup as a dampening material. Also I plan on trading the bue tak for some plasticine or newplast. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated...thanks

I've been researching various cable construction and braiding methods for DIY headphone cables.  I came across a discussion on head-fi about crosstalk in stereo cables spiraled or braided in/out or around each other in various ways without shielding.  Is this a valid concern in making headphone cables, or B.S.?

Several of us played with the trans and micropore tape and after a lot of messing around abandoned for felt. It is quite unpredictable to work with and can really cause problems that felt does not.

Hey Now,

Messed up one of My T50RP drivers while modding. Anyone have an extra one laying around I could buy? PM me if you have one. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response mrspeakers. I appreciate the heads up on the tape. I just ordered some plasticine to replace the blue tack in the baffles and I'm going to try a combination of duct tape and cork in the cups. How does that felt work with the drivers, and do you know about where in the thread that discussion was going on?
