Its the jack, not the cable.  You're likely to have to either have to clean or replace the jack.  The jack is recessed too so most right angle plugs won't fit into it either.

yeah really.. maybe it is my hair. Kind of acts like a natural padding. I really have no problem with stock grado headbands either. My hair grows straight out and is very thick. Might be why

No dice on the repair. Hopefully I can find another driver or maybe just sell the cups and move on. I hate to have to buy another set for a driver. This custom set is getting pretty expensive.

It is delicate to solder on a flex PC to be sure. The best way is to have a fine point iron with adjustable heat, set pretty hot, and use very thin solder, it will melt faster with less chance of spilling over the pad and creating a short. Pre-tin the iron tip and wipe on a wet sponge so it is hot and clean....

If you haven't heard the effects of that member's mods, it's probably not a great idea.  The customization on these is highly personal, and there's no guarantee that person will hear the same as you.

+1 After I get mine dialed in, i'd be willing to do the same to yours if you paid the shipping and just a few dollars for materials. But, no promises that you would like the sound.

while i can appreciate the caution to member 'franklyshankly', remember this is head-fi ... where no wallet is too thin or too thick that it can't bleed a little more &  heads and ears are incessantly bruised but never bloodied ... i say cut him a little slack, after all, how many have purchased thunderpants, hd800s, lcd-2s, he-5s, he-6s, or t50rps, etc. unseen and unheard?  so... t50rp modders with a track record, step up to the plate & give yon 'franklyshankly' a hand.

hehehe, this is such a friendly community .... I really appreciate the words of caution and support. I suppose there is a risk in tweaking and it's worth pointing out but I was hoping for just the basics (if there is such a thing) ... my budget is SO small right now, I'm basically choosing from Grado, M50, and these. I had and loved the m50s but found them to be ultimately kind of tiring (mostly because of the v-shape, even with white box) ... I like the Grado's but would likely find them tiring in the long run. The t50s seem the most neutral of my choices, but I am slightly worried about the roll off at the extremes.
 
If I could have any phone I would choose LCD2, then HD650, so I think i appreciate a warm-ish sig with deep tight bass but overall neutrality and lots of detail. I dont mind slightly recessed highs as long as there is true clarity and detail retrieval. I'm not terribly picky, so if there is any agreed upon mods (besides changing pads, which i can do) that can deepen and tighten bass, I'd def appreciate anyone with a track record working on a pair. I have yet to buy them, but if i can come to an agreement I would probably buy them next week! This purchase would allow me more budget for my DAC, so I would love it if this route works.
 
Besides the ortho-midy goodness, what are the strengths of this phone? I have gleaned that the black background, smooth and natural (opposed to neutral) timber, and clarity are really up there, which does sound REALLY promising ... can they get LOUD if properly amped and how are they with distortion?

Having a T50 mod and a 650 I can say this: I never listen to the 650.  In fact, I'm going to sell it, it's just a paperweight.
