I've used an iPod Touch 4th gen as my portable player for many years. It's getting on in age, and I'd like to replace it with another iPod (personal preference). I use the headphone jack and my headphones include the Philips SHP9500, Audio-Technica M50X (soon to get M40X as well), and Tin Audio T2.
I have read a lot of conflicting information about iPods as well as how much the DAC truly matters, particularly since I am going through the headphone jack. So, I'll ask, how does the iPod 5.5, 6th generation, and 7th generation compare in terms of sound? It seems that many are partial to the wolfson chip in the 5.5, while others state that there is no difference between that and the other generation's cirrus chip unless expensive audio equipment is used.
