Introducing Shanling EM7 – High-End Desktop Streamer DAC/AMP

@Shanling

Will you ever add a system wide Parametric EQ in a software update?

That’s really the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on buying the EM7.

Also, curious if this would be able to properly power a Susvara with the balanced conection? It’s 7W @ 32 Ohm but what would the wattage be at 60 Ohm?
I found Susvara has a pretty good synergy with EM7. However, I won't say it is fully powered. The middle and treble sounds well extended, but not as full and juicy as it was with my main setup ( CFA-3 amp/ Headtrip II). The dynamic is where this combo lacks. Bass is also not as punchy and deep. The spread and staging are there and sounds pretty natural. This combo is pretty good for most J-pop and vocal heavy tracks, not so much with symphony and rock in general.

But please keep in mind, my main setup was built around Sus and 1266. I spent years and tested multiple tubes and power amps then settled down with those 2 beasts. EM7 as a one stop solution, I can't be more satisfied with it's power.

Any comparisons between EM7 and M30?

Very curious to hear how the em7 compares to the em5 soundwise. I recently bought the em5 for use in a second system without any expectations with respect to performance and was pleasantly surprised at how well it performs. If the em7 perforns on a much higher level I would consider it as a way to simplify my main setup.

@Shanling I wish the floating ball input selector was a bit more responsive. I'm running the latest firmware. Is this a known problem?

Between these three, EM7 is definitely the most powerful, most dynamic, most controlled. It was partly designed to be used with AKG K1000.

Compared to M30, I think M30 is still ahead, as the AKM AK4499 is a better DAC than the ESS rival. But the sound tuning of M30 is smoother and less aggressive than EM7, so it can be up to personal preferences and headphone matching. This is with the high-power amplifier on M30 and EM7 run from a quality power outlet, to make sure it's closer match to the clean battery power of M30.

Compared to EM5, EM7 is quite a big jump in the audio department. EM5 was a bit of a compromise, to offer a good price/performance package. EM7 takes the same features of EM5, but mixes it with a much more serious audio circuit and it's a noticeable improvement in sound quality. But of course we are talking more high-end range of audio, so best to test out with your headphones and music to hear the difference for yourself.

And I can confirm that the floating button is not really responsive. I personally dislike it and use the swiping navigation instead.

This is not a review as such and certainly not about the sound quality because I actually think that is the best part of the EM7, unfortunately for me I don't think that the EM7 at this time justifies the money that I paid for it, I have a very large library of music which the unit handles much better than my JF Digital MX3 which tends to crash with my 4tb hard drive but all of my problems start with the Eddict player app, the initial pairing of the synclink is fine and everything loads just fine and most album art is transferred over, songs play fine but having such a large library presents a problem within the app because the search function does not work at all and to add salt to the wound when I scroll down and the alphabet pops up on the right hand side pressing on a letter does nothing, nada, zilch, so I have to scroll and scroll and scroll which ultimately leads to just listening to any albums that begin with A, I have addressed this to Shanling and was told to swipe right on the required letter, this does nothing, no surprise there then, I also wanted to use this for Tidal and knowing that the screen would be too small for my eyes or in fact for the app come to think of it I bought a tablet to use with the wireless projection feature, which works fine with occasional drop out until you try to move the screen and the lag becomes evident and unbearable, I'm not sure why Tidal, qobuz etc
could not have been implemented into the synclink. The unit itself is very responsive but I don't want to sit in front of it constantly and as i said the screen is too small for the streaming apps, everything i have moaned about is easily fixable within the app if they could be bothered which i guess they can't, I will probably end up having to sell this for way less than I paid especially now i have written this but sometimes to get things of your chest is the best way, sorry to moan but I'm angry at myself for wasting my hard earned money. Oh yeah and the play all function doesn't work either, grrrrrrr

Gentlemen, where can I see the frequency range (-3dB) for EM7? For headphone output. For RCA outputs. The specification is silent. Is this classified information? An interesting device for universal use!
It would be covering our standard 20 Hz to 40 khz specification at -0.5dB)

@Shanling Thanks! A very good parameter. With our -3 dB standard, it becomes even wider. Did I understand you correctly that the 4.4 headphone jack and the RCA line-out have the same range? This rarely happens... but why not. Let me clarify one more thing. Is it possible to switch digital filters built into the DAC (Slow Roll-off and others 6 pieces). Which digital filter is installed by default? The device has already gone on sale with us. I want to take a closer look.

Yes, you can change digital filters, there are 7 available. The preferred choice for Shanling is the Minimum Slow.

Hi all - new subscriber here. I’ve recently added the EM7 to the stereo stack, with the main purpose as transport for a local library, using the coax out and secondary use as driver for an Audeze LCD-XC. In both roles, simply outstanding! Only hope is that it will eventually support gapless playback of flac files.
