Introducing Shanling EM7 – High-End Desktop Streamer DAC/AMP
I get “Error. Unable to complete operation” too when I go into Qobuz on the EM7 but it disappears almost immediately. I have purchased tracks rather than unlimited streaming and they play fine from my Offline Library through the EM7.
When I stream a Hi Res song it plays back in random resolutions or not at all. Sometimes in MP3 format, sometimes 24 bit 44.1 kHz, even though it says it will only stream purchased songs in CD quality on the attached screen shot, or it won’t play the song at all and says “It is impossible to play this track. Thank you for trying another playback format or a different track”.
I gave up on Qobuz on the EM7, it doesn’t seem to work properly. I use my iPhone Qobuz app directly to Sony Bluetooth earphones at the gym and through CarPlay when I’m driving. Qobuz only streams all tracks in hi res if I play them from my iPhone mconnect app that I use to stream from my Melco N1ZS digital music library to the EM7.

The whole unit is overpriced and flawed, I would never buy another Shanling product, it resides under the bed and I will be lucky to get half my money back on it
I can forgive the EM7’s minor glitches because streaming pop, EDM, and hip hop from a Melco N1ZS through the EM7 to Empire Ears Legend Evo IEMs with a Liquid Links Venom cable is thunderous and superb. Definitely, synergy dependent though, Mest Indigos sound better on the FiiO M17 dap.
Sorry to hear about the problems you had with your EM7. If you’re not using it, you should sell it while you still can. I bought mine used and you are probably right about what you’d get for it.The whole unit is overpriced and flawed, I would never buy another Shanling product, it resides under the bed and I will be lucky to get half my money back on it
Software team is checking on the Qobuz. We found out that they are using app version that's now more than 2 years outdated, so it's possible that's the cause of these issues.I get “Error. This is the Shanling company approach to customers. The whole unit is overpriced and flawed
Any headfi thread ends up the same way.
I’ve been testing an LCD-4 with a Prion4 cable on the EM7 with songs streamed balanced out and a Fiio M17 balanced out powered by an iFi iPower Elite. Both are excellent and there isn’t much between them.
Sandu at Soundnews (who I bought the EM7 from) gave the LCD-4 and Fiio M17 combo a thumbs up in his 2022 M17 review. I find the LCD-4 a (better) headphone version of the Legend Evo IEM sound. Both are dense, slightly warm with fantastic bass and easy going treble. Vocals and mids are sweeter on the LCD-4 but bass slams a bit harder on the Legend Evos.
The EM7 and M17 are great second hand buys. The EM7 has to be paired with warm and dense headphones and IEMs and you have to stream to it. USB sounds too digital. Anything with slamming bass brings out the best in the M17 in headphone mode and DC powered.
Susvaras and TCs are technically better than LCD-4s but Susvaras are a pain with amplifier power, have a flimsy build, I’ve had 2 pairs fail, and TCs can sound harsh and mid-hollow without tubes and/or a Superconductor cable on certain tracks/genres. LCD-4s sound lush and sweet with everything you throw at them. They can do bass like a TC (nearly) but thicker and slightly less analytical, and can do soothing acoustic and vocals like the Susvara (nearly). They are also drivable portably without feeling short changed with the M17 and with a small all-in-one like the EM7.
