Introducing Shanling EM7 – High-End Desktop Streamer DAC/AMP
Mar 4, 2023 at 12:21 PM Post #76 of 97
Quick update: I’ve replaced the digital connect to an external dac with an analogue link to the amp. The quality of the analogue signal is excellent. When I get the chance, will compare with xlr outputs and then decide on final set-up.

Search function completely removed from synclink within the app?? was it not possible to just make it actually work
Still no way to pick albums from the alphabet on the right which makes me think what function does it have, a firmware update of 1.2gb which has done absolutely nothing.

Yes, software team decided to hide it from UI for now, until they fix it.
For the album alphabet quick jump, you are talking about Synclink, right? In the app it still doesn't work. On the device itself it works.

@Shanling, is there any update regarding Roon support?
Is it possible at least to have Roon ARC with the bit-perfect output? (bit-perfect for Roon ARC should be possible with AGLO as far as I understand).
I am interested in EM7, but IMO the absence of the Roon support in the modern streamer is a significant con.

PS: I own Shanling H7 and love this little device. It sounds fantastic and super versatile and feature-packed. It would be cool to have something like Shanling H7S with streamer capabilities and Roon support :relaxed: (It might be not that crazy since I know that internally it uses Android for the DAP feature although lacks WiFi).

We are testing some options, but so far nothing set. So can't make any promises about the Roon.

With my questyle cma twelve, i have my genelecs connected via rca out and headphone connected to the front 4 pin xlr. Allows me to have both connected at all times and switch between the two very quickly via a switch. Im guessing there is no physical switch on the EM7, but can i choose between the line out and headphone out via the software like the fiio r7(swipe down and tap lineout/headphone)?

I found Susvara has a pretty good synergy with EM7. However, I won't say it is fully powered. The middle and treble sounds well extended, but not as full and juicy as it was with my main setup ( CFA-3 amp/ Headtrip II). The dynamic is where this combo lacks. Bass is also not as punchy and deep. The spread and staging are there and sounds pretty natural. This combo is pretty good for most J-pop and vocal heavy tracks, not so much with symphony and rock in general.
I wasn’t expecting much from the Shanling EM7 but it’s surprisingly good with the Susvara, particularly with pop / vocals, as you say. It didn’t impress me as much with 1266 TCs.

In my main set up, I sweeten my 1266 TCs with a Cayin HA300 amp with WE 300b tubes and a JPS Superconductor cable.

The clarity and extension of mids and treble on the EM7 with the Susvara is excellent. I’m using a DHC Prion4 XLR cable to push that even further. Bass and dynamics are OK, just not as stand-out as a higher-end headphone amp. I haven’t heard the CFA3 so my benchmark for what a Susvara can do fully-powered is an Enleum 23R.

The Enleum 23R had superb bass and dynamics with the Susvara but the mids were untextured compared to a Cayin HA-300 so I sold it.

On low gain, I can listen to very sensitive Empire Ears Zeus XIV IEMs on the EM7 with absolutely no hiss and enjoy most of what my Susvaras can do on the turbo headphone mode at a relatively modest volume setting of 50 out of 100. The micro SD card slot and tilting screen makes it feel like I’m using an oversized but obscenely powerful DAP. The EM7 is a Jack-of-all-trades and master of fun!

What genius decided to put the power switch on the underside of the unit?! :) It means you can’t even use it without the rubber feet on. Even with the rubber feet on, you have to lift it up at the back to get your fingers under to switch it on and off. Surely, the dumbest decision in Head-Fi.

Hopefully, it will last longer than my Shanling M0 Pro DAP. The volume dial on that stopped working after a few weeks, I had to walk to the gym with it held in front of me to stop the Bluetooth cutting out even with low res codecs, and then I forgot to take it out of my gym shorts pocket and it ended up in the washing machine! :) The micro SD card survived and is now in the EM7. Every cloud…

The best synergy I’ve found with the Shanling EM7 are Legend Evo IEMs. The EM7 lacks bass but has excellent treble extension and Legend Evos are the opposite. Legend Evos love power, I listen to them on the DC-powered enhanced over-ear headphone mode on a FiiO M17. The EM7 goes past what the FiiO M17 can do on its medium gain setting.

I did some more experimenting with the EM7. Line Out by RCA and Pre-Out via coaxial to a Hegel H95 integrated amplifier and then out to Susvaras through the speaker taps on a Forza Noir Hybrid HPC cable with banana plugs.

I thought the clarity and treble extension of the EM7 might compliment the smooth, rich tonality of the H95 but none of the EM7 sound came through, it was just a lower rent H95 sound. The H95 has gone back to driving KEF LS50 Meta speakers for my TV.

Upgraded to 1.60. Much nicer search interface for playing music locally. Listening to Run The Jewels on the EM7 with Unique Melody Mest Indigo. Streaming from a Melco N1ZS. Less bright and brittle than playing from an SD card.

Good afternoon. I have a problem with shanling em7. when qobuz is loaded, "Unable to complit operation" is displayed. and no content is loaded. you can search for music and listen to it yourself, but nothing is loaded on the main page. empty field. changed firmware, did a full reset. nothing helped.
