Introducing MOMENTUM 4 Wireless
Sep 4, 2022 at 11:17 AM Post #197 of 687
I used it a few times on Windows for Team calls, and IOS phone calls.

Is it normal ANC stops or is lowered during calls ? Or I have to change something on Windows or the app ?

Thanks
As of this writing, when on a call the ANC is disabled.

Would you have any explanation about it? Is there technical limitations either software or hardware?

I ask because I am working in an open space and truly appreciate the ANC while listening to music, but the magic disappears a bit while I am having a call... Passive isolation is OK but not as outstanding as with ANC of course.

@nuxos try to disable Sidetone. I had the same problem with my Jabra 85t. Sidetone is good for a more natural feel during calls but along with your own voice it can feed outside noise through the mics. My Jabra doesn't disable ANC when Sidetone off. Don't know about M4.

I'll check on this w/ the development team but my money is on avoiding potential artifacts from overlapping phases.

[Edit] Indeed @nuxos this is to prevent issues with the user's voice signal.

I'm interested in using a USB-C cable, but I need to find a thin and flexible one, most are too chunky.

Quick update, as I've been testing the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless with a long USB-C to USB-C cable (Anker).

The M4W is indeed recognized by my MacBook as a core audio device (screenshot attached). In its system settings, I can choose the Bluetooth or USB pathway for both audio input and output. It works great as an audio interface and can also take advantage of the M4W's touchpad control gestures over USB (think the AVRCP commands over Bluetooth). Example: while streaming from TIDAL I was able to control play/pause, track skip (ahead and back), and raise/lower volume on the touchpad. It's instantaneous and intuitive. Auto-pause (when removing the headphones) paused TIDAL as well. Of course, the headphone's native touchpad functions are 100% functional (adaptive noise cancellation, for example).

Changing between TIDAL's sound quality modes indeed produced an audible difference through the M4W's internal DAC as well with HIFI mode sounding exceptionally more detailed and full versus NORMAL, for example. You can listen while charging this way, too.

[edit] While listening to TIDAL with the USB-C cable plugged in, then removing the USB cable mid-song, automatically defaulted back to the Bluetooth connection with the MacBook, resuming where I was in the song with only a momentary pause. I presume this may not work the same on all devices, but was pretty slick and would come in quite handy when watching a long movie, for example.

My very quick first impression after 1.5 weeks: I didn’t expect much, but the sound signature works quite well for me (I only listen to classical music: solo piano, chamber, symphonic and opera). I only hear the aforementioned bass heavyness when called for. Acoustic instruments sound very natural. On the whole it is somewhat dark, just like being in the Concertgebouw. It’s not really a dark can by any means, it’s just not as bright as the Ety4sr.

I’ve never been into EQ’ing. It works quite well, despite it being only a three band equaliser.

Noise cancellation is not quite what I expected:
  • It works well if and only if wind noise reduction (WNR) is off. However, even the slightest bit of wind noise will be amplified a lot.
  • If WNR is on, noise reduction doesn’t do anything. No wind noises, but a lot of noise comes through. It’s an either/or situation, making them very unsuitable for traffic here in the Netherlands, where there are lots of cars and also a lot of wind.
  • Adaptive is a useless addition to me. I find it unpredictable and I’d rather use the slider or gestures to adjust it myself.
  • ANC on max gives the sensation of being on a flight and having your ears closed off due to pressure.
I think both AirPods Pro and Etymotic ER4SR cancel out noise more effectively when being outside. Side by side compared to the AirPods Max in the very crowded Apple Store with WNR turned off they cancel out noise about as well as the APM, really not that much of a difference. It’s just that WNR is so frustrating. It makes working on a desk with a fan pointed towards you unpleasant.

As someone who uses a pair of HD660S as a daily driver, these sound fine to me. I tried a pair of Sony XM5s and they were just painful to wear (very tiny headband cushion), I returned them and got the M4s which are much more comfortable.

It seems to me like the software needs some work. The pinching gesture doesn't work that well. I can corroborate what DeTinux said about WNR, it's a bit funky.

I'm having another issue with my unit; the right horizontal hinge creaks quite a bit when moving my head and when walking. It seems like the hinge is over tightened. This is obnoxious as it comes through the ANC. I'm seriously considering an exchange over if this issue doesn't resolve itself in a few days. Is anyone else having this issue? Is this a normal problem with this sort of design?

Mine don’t creak at all … that would sure be annoying. Must be a quality control issue.

Separately - I use Roon on iPhone and these sound great. What’s weird is that when I take off the headphones, the music pauses (expected). I put them back on, Roon plays again (yay - expected behavior). When I tap the right ear cup, the music pauses (expected). BUT … when I tap again to play, it won’t play. I have to physically tap the play button in the Roon app to continue playing. Can’t figure this one out. All the other music apps do not behave this way (tap pauses, tap again continues playing EXCEPT with the Roon app). I just don’t understand why physically taking off the headphones and putting them back on works as expected, but not the single taps on the right ear cup for this one and only app. Weird, eh?

Hm, I really like them, but I am contemplating returning them. The small earcups I can live with, the instable app (altough I think on iOS it seems not to be that bad?), the wind noise too, but the creaking is really, REALLY annoying, even if it only happens when I turn my head. Especially if I have no idea if it affects its lifespan… Found a reddit thread where several people have the same issue.

the instable app (altough I think on iOS it seems not to be that bad?)
It took me awhile to get used to their iOS app. I have mine connected to 6 devices, and i would get wild results in trying to connect to them in different scenarios. I know it supports 2 simultaneous connections, but it was super buggy until I figured out how to connect in a fairly stable way. What i learned is to open the app and manually tap on the device you want to connect to under Connection Management (if not already connected) and/or turn off an unused connection (so that only 2 max remains on). Rather than relying on my other devices to make the connection, doing it via the app gives me a much better experience when I want to switch devices. Just wanted to mention it in case others struggle with this as well.

The only other thing that really bothers me (outside of the Roon app issue mentioned earlier) is the volume output when it connects to a device. Sometimes it just blows my ears out because for whatever reason the volume is way too high once it connects to a device. So dangerous. I wish there was some kind of option to always force a low-volume setting upon initial connection regardless of which device you connect to, and then just manually turn it up as needed for that listening session.

iOS has a system-wide volume limiter. Settings > Sounds and Haptics > Headphone Safety > Reduce loud sounds

I'm really on the fence with these. They sound pretty good, but they feel heavier than my 450 g Verite Closed and definitely feel heavier than Aeons, both of which are heavier headphones.

I'm not sure why all these portable headphones have such thin padding in the band in shallow ear cups with highly collapsible pads.

I was fine with 1000xm1 and 3, but with the 4 they reduced headband padding and with the 5 nearly removed it, so I have trouble wearing those headphones for over an hour.

Looking at the Momentum 4 it looked like the band had a lot padding, but it's very collapsible and thin so most of the 300 g weight sits on the top of my head.
