Introducing Head-Fi Classifieds!
Apr 27, 2023 at 5:13 AM Post #331 of 449
Because I will not list classifieds ads here on Head-Fi any more after so many years. Even Ebay Germany (not only their classifieds section, but also their auction platform) is cheaper now for sellers than listing a classified ad on Head-Fi because of the forced use of a payment processor such as Paypal G&S. It is that simple, sorry to say. I know that my personal action is completely unimportant for Head-Fi, but this new classifieds policy will alienate and expel especially many sellers from Europe, because Paypal (and similar also costly but even less common services) is not so widely used in Europe and does add extra cost without being 100% secure for each party, both buyer and seller.

Cheers,
Bernie
Sorry, I don't see how eBay Germany could possibly be more than Headfi. With eBay Germany, you have to pay listing fees, final value fees, payment fees, shipping fees and tax. For Headfi, you have payment fees and shipping. If you think it's cheaper, go for it. I don't see buyers liking it more.

A huge thanks Brian to you and the Head-Fi team. This is best practice protection for any sensitive online service, and the best first line of defense in preventing "account takeovers". These have been on the rise on Head-Fi in the past year (and everywhere), and while nothing is ever failproof in fraud, it will make it exceedingly hard and much less attracking to fraudsters in terms of risk/reward.

Really appreciate having this in place. I personally implement 2FA across all online services where I have any financial transactions or sensitive data, and would recommend this for everyone. It is very little effort for a lot of security. Like a smart colleague once told me, "Don't make perfect the enemy of good". This isn't perfect, but it's very, very good.

That's a great idea Jim!

Actually true. But what it does practically do is give you time for effective recourse. Having gone through a couple of bad apples in the past, here is what I've learned:

PayPal is actually not necesary your friend in these situations because, formally, in a G&S transaction they become the actual seller of record. So the vendor your credit card company will face is PayPal as a seller (who in turn will have their own process with the actual seller they are fronting). So, when disputing fraud, you are actually disputing a PayPal charge, and they are left short-changed and forced to chase the actual seller and potentially be the party losing money if you are refunded by them and they can't recuperate the funds from the seller's account (especially if that PayPal account was also fake).

However, in a F&F transcation or a direct bank transfer of any kind, the money instantly transfer and settles, and therefor is instantly gone. Credit card transactions, which underline PayPal trasnactions, take a few days to settle. While you should start a dispute with PayPal if a fraud occurs, your best recrouse will likely be a dispute through your credit card. If you are based in the US, Amex is the absolutely best in my experience that regards and will instanly put a hold on your bahalf and protect you by default from any online fraud; but generally all credit card compamies would have a dispute mechanism that should be helpful. I am unsure how this works in other countries, so this commentary is entirely U.S. specific.

why?

That is universally the best advice one could give Daniel.

Anytime I have ever seen a deal that was too good to be true, it always was.

If there were a bible for classifieds, this would be the first commendmant: "Thy shall not pursue a deal that is too good to be true, because it is not".

With PayPal, the buyer can commit fraud better than the seller.

I look forward to the whole with great concern, not only for the used market.
Why? Simply because customers will think twice before buying a brand new model from a dealer or manufacturer when it becomes more difficult for them to sell
At the end of the day it should be up to the buyer to decide how much risk he wants to take, and to be allowed to choose
And if someone insists on G&S I think both sides would surely come to an agreement👍
About The two-factor authentication to publish a sale ....I personally see as positive👍

NOMAX

PS.This is like my daily business...do I buy government bonds (safe) shares (manageable risk) or prefer derivatives / options (high risk)..I decide for myself 😎
PSS.lol

eBay Germany charges nothing at all from private sellers since a few months ago. No listing fees, no final value fees, not even fees for the payment procedure. Only value-added services cost small amounts, but need not be used of course. So the only cost remaining is shipping fees.

But my point is not to advertise for eBay Germany, but to make clear that I will not be the only one leaving the classifieds section of Head-Fi. If the new rules would really help the community (which they do not imho, as I have tried to describe in previous posts), they would be easier to accept.

Cheers,
Bernie

Hello, one question, if I want to sell 2 products in a combo, how can I do? According to the rules, only sales of a single product are allowed, but I want to sell my DAP + IEM in a combo and not as a separate item. (since it saves me in shipping costs and also in making an attractive offer)
Thank you.

Thanks for all the work you have done to make head-fi a more secure place to buy and sell. I just found I am unable to edit my ads already posted. Do I have to create a new one or is it a bug to be fixed.
You should be all set now since it's been more than an hour, but this information is available in the FAQ:
Q: I just enabled 2FA on my profile, why can I still not create/edit/bump/close a listing?
A: There are a number of checks and verifications that our system runs when someone enables 2FA on their profile, and it's possible to help the process along by logging out after enabling 2FA and then log in again. Please note that after enabling 2FA it may take up to an hour for access to Head-Fi Classifieds to be granted. The requirement for 2FA is in addition to our 30 day and 15 post requirements, so all three requirements must be met before a Head-Fi'er can post in Head-Fi Classifieds.

We do not see 2FA enabled on your profile, so please enable it and complete the process for it to take effect.

You can sell two items bundled together as a bundle, but you cannot list two items in the same listing and then sell them individually. If multiple items are sold as a bundle, please make sure that's listed in your description. From our Head-Fi Classifieds Rules & Guidelines:
If you are selling a collection of items in a bundle, such as a collection of CDs, that is considered one item.

What about for trades? If I have 10 items and I don't have a specific trade in mind, can I post them all in one listing? In this instance, I don't know if someone would want 3 items, 10, or just 1.

If they will not be traded as a collection, they cannot be included in the same listing. This is due to multiple factors. For example: a single listing containing 3 items sold/traded separately can only receive feedback once rather than once per individual buyer.

Consider a collection of tubes. If you have a box full of them and you want to trade for something, listing the entire collection at once for a bulk trade is allowed. Listing the collection and then trading/selling individual tubes or pairs from the collection to separate people is not.

Yes, I understand what you're saying but then what I'm proposing seems like it would make sense.

I have 10 items for trade in 1 listing. I trade 4 to one person, remove the others and exchange feedback once.

I have 10 items for trade in 10 listings. I trade 4 to one person, close 4 listings, and exchange feedback 4 times.

Yes

I would promote 2FA also for buyers, so anyone involved in classified has that featured to reduced fake or account takeover risks

Then, remaining risk is based on reputation/track record of real people.

It isn’t just a simple “recommendation” but a “requirement”.
First they cannot require it as there is no control of how you get paid.
Two, this is exact wording, "like" does not indicate requirement per-se.

Payments
- Please only request payments via protected methods like PayPal Goods & Services. Do not request payment via unprotected methods like PayPal Friends & Family, money order, bank transfer, or any other unprotected payment methods. These requirements also mean we do not allow "net to me" requirements on Head-Fi Classifieds.

Three, this part was always there, recent announcement on 2 step authentication has no bearing on it.

I think they basically do require Paypal G&S. If you PM someone requesting otherwise, that person can report your PM and then you would be banned or whatever.

PayPal G&S protects the buyer first and the seller last, if even at all. PayPal will issue refunds without even requiring the item to be returned nor will it matter if the buyer returns an empty box. As a seller I have little to no protections. I'm so scared every time I have to use it, since I'm taking all the risk.

And?

Head-fi is choosing to require it so if you want to use head-fi classifieds, there you go.
