Plus, without any wi-fi or streaming apps to contend with, you don't need to add one of these to your home network:

I have found P6 Pro to work great in delivering a smoother sound while LP6 is very energetic. For musical IEMs like the bird, I actually think that it could work better with P6 Pro as it may get “too engaging” when paired with LP6.

With FS, I have found both DAPs to pair great as they fit different moods.
So LP6 is not a discrete R2R but “industrial grade R2R chip”. Do they use the same Analog Device chip used in Schiit multibit DACs or TI/BurrBrown?

I think it is Intel's FPGA chip. I am not super familiar with Schiit multibit DACs or TI/BurrBrown

Edit: I think I read it from where that the cost of the chips themselves is already >$1k.

That’s part of it but from Musicteck

1, Intel large-scale FPGA and two ultra-high linear industrial grade R2R decoder chip

there’s two decoder which I suspect is similar to Schiit DACs (they use AD5781/91). I dunno

Thought it was the Burrbrown chips for the R2R, getting rare as they are no longer made. Not sure. The FPGA handles the clock and software steps before the R2R signal conversions.

I think I read it somewhere as well about them using AD r2r dac chips, but not 100% sure. Also, keep in mind, LP6 Gold ($4.5k) uses 2 r2r chips while LP6 Ti ($6k) uses 4 chips.

Yes, it is sad that R2R DAC chips have become the province of the few. Growing up, there were only R2R DAC chips. But they are more expensive to manufacture. And guess progress mandated cost savings as the downward price pressures took its toll. The Tera Player, if I recall correctly uses the long discontinued Philips R2R DAC chips. The chap who makes Tera Players bought them in a big batch during some liquidation sale. Incredible to think that when it was first released it was below US$200 and now it’s like 3000 Euros and it still has a active secondary market

Maybe they were focusing on tube output? I found M30 dual NuKorg tube implementation to be not as good as C9, but their (M30) solid state output is pretty good! In software, M30 is not bad, but still on Android 7 and closed system with only a few streaming apps allowed, so there are some limitations. I know they updated the fw after I tested it, but the very early M30 fw was lagging.
Agreed that the SS is very good on M30

R2R is better done in IC wafer based, or a chip form, and not discrete. So virtually speaking, discrete R2R is because you wanted to ”sound cool” but, IC chip R2R is where the best of the technologies is lying at
Thanks for your insight Vince. :)

What external DAC are you using and what type of files (sampling rate, kHz, and bit depth) are you playing? If I'm not mistaken, there is a bandwidth limitation for the max sampling rate for SPDIF being 192kHz/24bit vs USB-C being 'unlimited' up to 768kHz/32bit. So, that is one way to pick one vs the other. Then, not all external DAC/amps support both connections, many portable ones only have usb-c input. I usually test everything with iDSD BL which supports both, and play <= 192kHz files, and my preference depends on pair up and earphones/headphones I'm listening to. I just let my ears do the final sound judgment

Quick Q @twister6 : for the P6 Pro and the LP6, what is the limit when using them as USB DAC, eg if I stream on my iphone or Roon thought the AK SP2000? I’m asking cos there is no way to telling by the display on the DAP. I was reading Headfonia’s review and there was a suggestion it was limited to 16/96. Of course that was in Jan 2020. Thanks! :)

Just check through Roon. 16/96 , sorry for the potato pic

No worries at all. :) Thanks. Cos mine will show me the bit rate until it gets to my SP 2000. But I have it as a digital transport into my P6 Pro.

Oh, it looks like Roon is showing the conversion to the SP2000 but not after it into the P6 Pro. When I use my iPad Pro it shows it down sampling to 16/96.
Yup. Cos it can't see beyond the SP2000
