iFi audio NEO Stream - Sweet Streams!
Aug 26, 2023 at 9:31 AM Post #1,171 of 1,445
Airplay no longer works on my Neo Stream. It always worked perfectly but I just updated the firmware to 2.16.06 and now it doesn't work at all.

Is there any way of rolling back the firmware?

I learnt recently: go to System, then do factory reset and your on the previous version again. I had the same problem with airplay

Thanks but I got it working without a factory reset. Normal restarts weren't working but for some reason unplugging all cables and restarting did the job (What?)

I'll see how it goes.......given my history with this particular product, I will expect the worst - that way trouble free performance will be a bonus

By the way - I'm curious why the Neo Stream doesn't automatically pick up the wifi signal after losing it? Any break in the wifi signal and the NS requires restarting rather than just re-connecting like any other appliance, computer, streamer etc.

I wonder if part of the problem is that it's using an old version of Volumio, which is based upon a version of Debian that is no longer supported -- not even for security updates. When I was digging around via ssh, the way the developers had set up the software for the Neo Stream was very weird. Sometimes switching between AIO and other modes would fail, or the device boots with a red light.

....and the Neo Stream continues to meet those very low expectations. Since posting above that I might avoid a factory reset, I've gotten Airplay to work twice out of a couple of dozen tries. I have now reluctantly done a factory reset, which is a huge inconvenience as it wipes all my playlists and I have to redo them all. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to do this.

Once my music files finish scanning I'll test the Airplay function extensively and if OK, I will avoid future firmware updates without guarantees written in blood from iFi that it won't cause a problem

I persist with this product because it is somewhat unique in providing the NAA function and WiFi, plus I couldn't sell it with a clear conscience.....but my patience is wearing very thin. Remember - this is a replacement unit for me. The first one was a disaster that kept randomly resetting and losing network connection during playback and after weeks of correspondence with iFi was eventually replaced.

Hi, just sharing my experience.
I change from analog out to usb and neo not responding from internet to anything…. Restart, back to factory, anything. After that i restart the router and work like a dream. Manage to make compare the internal dac with a topping e70v. Multiple switches between usb spdif and analogic and not even a problem.

Airplay still isn't working and now I can't even play my local music files, with a red error message coming up briefly when I try to play something with "failed to open ALSA device". I try to delete the mounted drive and start again but the software won't let me - another red error message "Error - cannot remove share."

I give up - I don't need the NAA function right now. My 9 year old Auralic Aries is back in place and working fine.

I think there is a pic of me on a dartboard in iFi HQ.

Sorry, for all these issues guys, I know that support is aware but please report any of these issues anyway, the more tickets the better on this one I think.

I know that the way I resolved this airplay issue was very weird, but I'll post it anyway.

I normally run the NEO wired with the optibox, but after the new update, I could not see it thru normal methods. So I unplugged all cables ( Ethernet USB even analog). After this I set up the unit with the Hotspot method and followed the instructions on my phone thru the Stream-iFi app. (Most know I am not a Fan of this method). Once this was done. This setup was WiFi only with the included antenna.

After verifying everything was working fine for me, I reconnected the Optibox and now run with Wifi and Ethernet active and had no issues since then, all is working fine.

I also reported this to Tech so if it works this way for you please let them know also with a ticket here.

Has anyone connected iFi NEO to an external DAC?
Tell me how it works, what connection sequence and what options you need to enable on iFi NEO.
I tried to connect an external DAC to the iFi NEO, turned on the Roon, but the Roon does not see the iFi NEO with this connection and the music does not play. The DAC was connected to a headphone amplifier.

Hi. I connected my INS to external DAC Musician Pegasus with USB cable. It works fine. I have no problems with this connection. INS successfully sees this DAC. Mainly Airplay using.

I selected my m2tech Yong DAC in the INS options, selected the USB option in the m2tech Yong DAC, but the music did not play, then I rebooted the INS and everything worked, the music plays.
Thanks everyone for the help!

After taking a week to calm down I dragged out the Neo Stream again to see if I could get it working:
  1. Another factory reset to 2.15.8
  2. Set up the network
  3. Scanned all my music
  4. Same as before - can't play anything "failed to open ALSA device".

So I updated the firmware again:
  1. Updated to 2.16.6
  2. Now all my network music plays perfectly - no more red error messages
  3. Airplay still doesn't work as per the first time I updated. It works immediately after the update but subsequent attempts fail 9 times out of 10 in conjunction with hard restarts.
I thought I'd do the right thing and raise a ticket. As I have quite a history on a previous ticket on this product I logged in, only to discover that despite having a saved login, I had to fill in all my details again. I gave up - I'm in no mood for all the basic obvious questions again anyway so I'll wait for the next firmware update and hope it fixes it. I really hope it doesn't take as long as the last one and it would be nice if iFi indicate some sort of expected timeline here or if there is any progress on what is obviously not an isolated issue.

It's ironic that an update to improve the Airplay function actually screwed it up.
