If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

Got the 2XR but am returning it. Too warm sounding.. kinda defeats the purpose of an Ety. I also can’t seem to tame the last bit of sharpness at the top end. Nice upper mid / lower treble, easily some of the best, and less shouty than the 2SE.

I personally love the treble extension on the er2... extremely smooth for a DD iem and lot better presence and sparkle than the er4s. The small bass boost and extra dynamics on the 2se is also welcome. I just wish the mids were as clean and detailed as the er4, but I guess you can't have everything.

I agree that the bass dynamics of the 2SE were done well, though I can’t comment on how it compares to the other non XR Etys. Definitely some decent punch, and no air pressure issues as I was initially worried about.

The ER4SR is only 45 ohms though, so wouldn't the ER3SR with a 75 ohm adapter be harder to drive?
the 4SR and 4XR are different drivers, so whatever might be correct for the 3XR+adapter(not 75ohm in series if the total impedance is supposed to be like 45), is not said to be also the case for 3SR and 4SR. maybe it is, IDK, it's just not demonstrated by whatever happens on the XR series.

75ohm is the adapter to go from old ER4P to old ER4S.

ER4S ER4P = Knowles ED29689 + resistor
ER4B = Knowles ED29689 + RC network.
ER4XR = Sonion er88 custome tuned driver very similar to 2354 + resistor (which is basically ported 2389 which is ported ED29689)
ER4SR = Knowles ED32885 custome tuned driver very similar to ED29689 + resistor
HF2/3/5 = Sonion 2389(Sonion equivalent of ED29689) + resistor
ER3 is unknown but I guess they are the same as ER4xR series
There maybe more variations with er3 drivers. Some people can get exact response of er4 out of er3. But some don't. I recommend 50ohm+ for er3 to get best sound.
Resistor are in the cable for first generation and are in the driver housing for second generation.
Wasn't the HF supposed to be a dynamic driver IEM?

Basically, ER4 = ER3 + 75 ohms

And back in the days, it was the same

ER4S = ER4P + 75 ohms

And @csglinux proved this as well, and the update is, Ety implanted the 75 ohm resistor inside the driver housing.
I have both and tried with adapter. They still sound different to me. The E4 a little cleaner sounding and more detailed. Of course I could be imagining it, yet when I got the Er4sr on first hearing I was confident something was different about the sound.

I have a 3xr which I love. Is the 4xr a good upgrade?

I’m probably not gonna buy Etys anymore but I’m curious about the 4XR as well having heard the 4SR. The 4XR has a lot of praise, though I’ve read distortion is higher and more noticeable than the 4SR.

I love the 4XR. I don't know what you mean about distortion though. Frequency Sweeps have no buzzing or anything at medium-high volumes. With the bass they kind of remind me of small concerts they used to hold in pubs or bars.

@EtyDave Any news on the balanced cable and new dual flange plugs?

Do you know if the balanced cable will have 2,5mm or something else?

Good morning from office with my old and faithful ER-4P, wishing a great week to all Etyheads!

May supreme isolation and holy accuracy be with you :ksc75smile:
