HM-901

If the line out gives "line level" it would use more power.

The "line signal" on HM901 feeds both the amp card as well as the line-out in the dock connection, as it comes from the DAC section. So essentially this signal is enable / active all the time, thus saying "line out gives "line level" it would use more power" makes absolutely no sense - whatever level HM901's line-out is, it will all be the same for both line-out on the dock as well as feeding to the amp card, even when neither is being used. For reference, the line-out on HM901 is a a very strong 2.5Vrms.

Question(s),
I'm getting the Hifiman HM-901+Balanced Amp Card. I've been excited about it for a while and have just decided on the Audeze LCD-3s for the cans. Does Anyone know if this setup will need a portable amp? I know that's what the amp card is for but maybe I'd get better results with a portable amp/dac. Perhaps the Centrance M-8 LX? Assuming they are compatible, something about optical or TOSLink, whatever that is, hopefully that applies to the Hifiman/Audeze, I don't know, I'm a rookie. Also cables, will I need to spring for a pricey balanced cable on top of the aforementioned kit. If so, I'm thinking copper because I like a warm sound over a prickly one, UM's Thor could be the way to go, or will the balanced cable supplied be sufficient. I need portability so I wouldn't get a desktop amp, and I know that all this will be quite thick, but I can't be the only one who enjoys that.

I use this exact combination.

Why do you think you need an amp if you are buying the balanced amp card? The whole point of the 901 is to be single box solution.

If the LCD-3 cable / plug is balanced - i.e. has a 4-pin XLR plug, then you can do with an adapter cable from female 4XLR to male TRRS (mini-jack with four connections). Then you will have full benefit of the Balanced amp, including power.

I routinely run my LCD3 balanced with the 901+balance amp card via a 4pin XLR to trrs adaptor and it drives the LCD3 very well, and IMO better than with some mid tier dac/amp combo such as violectric v200/800.  In fact, the Minibox/Discrete/Angel or even the IEM card all pairs well with LCD3 and drive it effortlessly.

Seems like the stable 1.085 is just out ! (seen on hifiman.com)

HM-901 V1.085 and HM-802 V1.003 firmware update
Firmware Update Instruction
1. Please download the new firmware zip file first and then copy it to your SD card (Do not change the name of the firmware file or decompress it). Only the FAT32 SD card can be used.
2. While pressing the HOME button, hold the Power key up until the HM-901 is power on. After the screen is on, release the power key. Then release the HOME button until the hifiman logo disappears. Now the player will be in recovery mode.
3. Wait until the first picture shows on the screen. The system will be updated automatically.
4. After the update is done, power off the player and then reboot it to finish the whole process.
Bug issued
1. Improve the driving program for the wheel, filter most of the wrong signals caused by aging and fix the wheel reversing issue.
2. The default of the digital chip filter is set as opened and it is shown on the display of the player. (For HM-901 only)
3. CUE support.
4. Fix the playlist disorder issue when the player is rebooted under resume-playing mode.
Note for digital chip filter function:
The function is unique for ES9018 chip. If it is on, there will be slight difference in sound quality for different tastes. The function is closed in the past firmware except for the V1.081 Beta version. As some users prefer that, we add this option.

I've updated my 802, so far so good. Seems a lot 901 users were happier after the update at erji.net.

Is 1.8.5 meant to sound different ?
