HiFiMan Susvara

I just tried the Susvara from the gsx mini and wa22. The bass seems a bit lacking, but the mids and highs are plenty loud.

Is the lack of bass:
1) normal/to be expected/a tradeoff
2) because I'm using the wrong amp
3) due to newness and needs more breaking in (fresh out of the box)

Nice! Do you know where he got his direct speaker cable adaptor from?

Hey sorry I'm not sure. Don't see any labels on the adaptor, and he didn't mention. I'll ask him the next time I get in touch with him.

Based on my listening last night I do not believe the Susvara lacks any bass. I played music with deep bass and the Susvara reproduce it spectacularly.

If you are experimenting not enough bass is probably because under amping the Susvara.

I am a huge believer in “burn in” or “break in”. But I would refer it to slow cooking in food related scenarios. The Taste generally stays the same as when you got done trying and mixing it, but over the time, it got more intense, and that is it.

I just meant that even with break in, you can always tell the general sound performances and signatures of any headphones out of the box. So usually when it doesn’t sound right then it doesn’t. I haven’t seen or witnessed any circumstances that the headphones transform from Bass light to Bass heavy over the break in period. However, my experiences is limited, and hence I am here, interested about what you will find out in your case

Under Amping is one of those reason where a headphones doesn’t produce bass though. What are you running it with ?

By the way, my experience is with them fresh out of the box.

I have the woo audio 22 and gsx mini. Both can run my TC Phi with thunderous bass. Volume pot is around 10 to 11 o'clock so lots of headroom..

With the Sus, I can get to about 12 o'clock but then the mids and highs get way too loud.

I'll run them in for longer and will also try it with my Benchmark hpa4 later on.

The Susvara at 60 ohms and 83 dB are not easy to drive.
The PrimaLuna provides about 7 watts in the 60 ohms and the Enigma about 13 watts.
As said before both power the Susvara great and there is no lack of bass at all even fresh out of the box.

Great thanks! I've been looking for a replacement to my current adaptor.

Susvara Bass quantity is lower compared to TC and even to the D8000 Pro. Susvara bass quantity is around the same level as Utopia.
In my experience, a speaker amp does help to improve the dynamics of the Susvara.

The TC Phi is 47 ohms and 88 dB so it is significantly easier to drive. Just by the dBs you need less than half of the power to have both the Susvara and the TC at the same output level and at 47 ohms it also make it easier to drive.

Sorry but I disagree on this. I own the Utopia and the D8000 (not the pro version but the pro version ear pads) and in my opinion the Susvara goes lower than the Utopia and the D8000. They might have a little more emphasis in the mid bass area.

Question: If the amps I'm using can get the Sus volume up to ear splitting loudness, if there isn't enough watts output (as per technical specs and compared to other amps mentioned above), would it still mean the drivers aren't sufficiently driven to produce more bass?

There is sub bass and mid bass. The Susvara has slightly better extension but lacks the bass punch that is present on the D8000 Pro.

The GS-X Mini at 5w into 50ohms is more than enough to drive Susvara.

What I think (and I'm probably totally off on this), is that bass draws a lot more power from an amplifier than the rest of the frequency curve. When I had the HA-300, the VU meters would swing wildly when it was a bass heavy track. An amp with high power reserve (which I equated to having lots of capacitors and a big power supply) would have better bass and dynamics. I'm a total layman on this and would like to hear from someone who has a better understanding on this topic.

When I owned the Susvara, I had the exact same experience on my 430HAD (8w at 50ohms). Miids and highs would be ear splitting and bass not yet satisfactory for an overall painful listening experience. I could still tell Susvara had the potential to sound fantastic, I just couldn’t get it there.

I would agree with this. Bass extension and Bass punch are two different things. I personally prefer normal punch and better extension.
