yes, the cloth is adhered directly to the grill, on the inside half of the grill.

Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I finally used spray adhesive to attach the dust shields.  Found an ancient can in the garage, which, fortunately, still worked.  Much easier than a glue stick.

Think these would do - http://www.amazon.co.uk/L091-Black-Metal-Speaker-Grill/dp/B000KH9V1W/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1407778445&sr=8-8&keywords=Black+Metal+Mesh+Speaker+Grill

yeah ill try to get the one Thurston posted and organza i guess. But the cloth Thurston used is incredibly thin! The cloth is glued on to the grills correct ?

Thin is where it's at, yo

The weave is pretty loose, so they affect the sound less.  Any loss of width I hear with it vs. without it is marginal.  Hearing is believing, and you may prefer them wide open.  I prefer them with, and not worrying about dust is simply a bonus.

Here's what I use.  Hopefully you can get it there.

There are lots of options for dust shields.  If you've got a local fabric store, go there and poke around.  Find some organza and compare it to other, relatively thin material.  Or buy some women's hose/stockings.  Raw fabric should be cheaper, though.

HTH.

I'd obviously trim it to only use the flat parts but since it measures 25cm across, there should be enough leeway to cut the required 8cm or so for the grilles :]

I use what I use because it's the most open I've found.  Also, I control the diameter when cutting.  You need to be able to thin the edges a little to allow the tabs to insert into the slots.  That ring looks a little thick at the edge, and of course, it may be too big or small.  Too big and you'll end up trimming anyway, and trimming the sheet of aluminum grill I use would be much easier.  But you could buy a couple and see what they're like.  Personally, I'd just use that cheap steel mesh from a trash can or whatever before I bought those.  YMMV.

These are cheaper, and 8" is plenty wide:

or get the 12" version.  I think that would give you enough for a pair.  Just do some measuring to make sure.

So you thinking these or a trash can?

Like I said, I'd spend the extra to get more.  I imagine you'll still need to thin the edge to get the retaining rings in, but that's a simple test.  But learn from my mistake: if you do need to thin the edge (like with a metal file; fastest method), you want to start with grills slightly wider than what you'll end up with.  The first I cut were perfect, but by the time I'd thinned the edge, they were too small.

I really don't like the trash can mesh look, but that's me.

The stock grill I just measured is about 86mm.  HTH.

That's the same one I was looking at. If you happen to buy it, please report back on  how and whether it works

HE560 measurements grill / no grill / DIY grill (some aluminium mesh I had laying around). REW mdat for download -> link

Again same results as posted in the impressions thread. You can see how the 4/6/9/13/15khz peaks and nulls are affected, no grill being marginally best. Diy grill also result in the same subbass boost (maybe it only requires to remove the fabric..).
