Hifiman RE262 Initial Impressions

Gotcha, so the amp on its own shouldn't color the J3's sound right? All it should do is raise the volume limit and bass boost if it has that option?

Well it would color the sound but not the extent a DAC would. If anything I think the E7s amp may sound even worse than the J3s internal one so I think a T3/T3D is a much safer bet.

I haven't used my RE262 for a while since I've been experimenting with other IEMs, but I just took them out for another listen. Wow! Out of my Audio-GD Sparrow, these are to die for. Without an amp these are very good, but with a decent amp they are breathtaking. The sound is just so lush and the mids are eargasmic, the sound is so natural and intimate, while still maintaining a great clarity throughout the entire spectrum. A lot of other IEMs sacrifice clarity for intimacy and warmth, but the RE262 walks this line perfectly.

definitely. these sound like my hd598 but with a smoother treble. even sounds like some full size cans

I agree about them being lush 

 Initially I had described them as liquid but that is more apt for the e-q5, the re262's are the lush ones

Wow, that's a great price for one of my 'top 3 favorite' IEMs. However, I'm at a loss as to why they continue to add balanced termination. There aren't even any products out there that can really take advantage of it...

Hmm so only the Hifiman 601 batch buyers got non-balanced RE262s (and preordered/review units). Makes it more like a limited edition compared to the 150$ preorder batches which have that bothersome balanced output.
