Hifiman IEM's: RE-400 and RE-600
May 13, 2015 at 8:36 PM Post #2,896 of 3,507
  RE 400 is ~ 80 bucks (orig. $99)

RE 600 is ~ 200 bucks (orig. $400)

My choice would be the extra ~$120 for the RE 600, if I had the cash.
If not, then I'd be more than satisfied with the RE 400 at ~$80.

The RE 400 is amazingly ridiculous (or ridiculously amazing?) for the price now, but the RE 600 transports to another dimension with its smooth, clear, holographic sound that more-or-less works with all music.

Buy yourself a personal listening room, or a personal nirvana; the price is now right for each.

I've had my RE 600s for about 6 months now, use it with a Fiio X3/E12A and quite possibly the best headphone I own. Yes I do have concerns about durability given the many negative comments but the sound out ways any doubts. If I could find a full size headphone with the same sound I'd be on it in a flash.

Man, your guys' comments are making me even more interested in the RE-600, especially since I like my RE-400s so much. After getting some new earphones (JVC FX40 and VSonic VSD2), I've gotten back to my RE-400s and fallen back in love with them.

Yeah - I bought the re600 at 299 used and thought I got a good deal. At $199 it's a great IEM and a great value.

I'd like to try RE-600 as I'm positively surprised about RE-400. Unfortunately in Europe RE-600 are more exensive than in the US, costing us EUR 239. Some B-Ware deal might be an opportunity. For instance, I got my RE-400 B-Ware on German Amazon for EUR 60 that is an extremely good price for such a talanted pair of IEMs. Though reported reliability issues make me a little reserved.

Thanks for the link. I'm afraid that shipping costs and customs duty will make the price close to EUR 239.

Ok...not sure about customs tax in Germany but HD charge nominal shipping charge say $10-$15....but not all the packets are charged by customs?....again they send mostly thru dhl so 200% chances you fall into customs pit....I hate dhl.

After all is said and done, keep in mind that the RE 600 price drop could mean that there's something new on the horizon.....

Well there is the already announced RE-1000, but that's three times the price and a CIEM.

HiFiMAN has been giving a fair amount of notice before new products are released recently. I think a big part was at $400, the RE-400 was just a much better value.

I don't want to end up defending products like fanboys usually do but in some occassions, I really don't know what to do - to laugh or cry in desperation.
Have a look at a guy who has supposedly been given both RE-400 and RE-600 to review. He doesn't seem to know a thing (like the balanced adapter issue) while he most probably can't fit these right into his ears (not getting a proper seal). The result is him thrashing both models. And again, he was given the headphones for review purposes and supposedly knows more compared to the average consumer.

For the record, I've just sold my Altone200 as they couldn't compete in sheer musicality with my RE-400. I've also had quite a few IEMs the past few years and nothing can beat the RE-400 in smoothness and delicateness, true to life lively sound. They just need to sit very deep into your ear canal to get the most out of them. Once you've achieved the optimal fit and have them run in for at least 50 hours, there's not a chance not to like this beauty. Unless you're deaf of course...

I'm now considering upgrading to RE-600 as even a marginal difference will be thoroughly appreciated. I love the comfort/form factor of my RE-400 so it will make a safe investment.

To my experience, the RE-400s need to be driven by portable devices with a quite powerful output ni order to shine and unfold their full potential. Initially, I had problem in getting a satisfactory sound out of my Note 4 when I first got them, while my FiiO X1 drives them adequately and very musically. However, in my opinion, the best thing as far as synergy goes is: Note 4 > Poweramp > OTG cable > Dragonfly 1.0 > RE-400. The sound is out of this world and quite possibly the best I've ever heard from an IEM!

You can tell he doesn't know much because he says the strain relief is a good one

I had the RE400 for 6 months and no problems with strain relief so far, however the cable and housing conducts static like mad.  If it weren't for that I'd be quite happy with this IEM for a long time.  Now I'm looking to get a pair of UERMs when they go on sale again.
