That's what I've read... but I'm just a parrot here. On paper it looks like there's enough grunt to push to high levels.

Both of mine did.

I was thinking one of the smaller models like the TP21. If you're moving up in size/cost, well I guess you're back to the mini-x/Flex comparisons again.

It seems that Emotiva is the only logical choice in that price range.

Thanks for your info.

Edit:
anybody have any comment on Emotiva's dac (XDA-2 Gen2)?

Can you afford to shell out $200 for a used Crest CA2? That thing will trounce the Mini-x. Heard both and owned the Crest at one point myself.

Caveat is you need a preamp.

I agree the Emotiva is a good starting point but the HE6 scales up so much more. I used to have an Emotiva mini and my modest vintage amps/receivers had better bass, sound stage and imaging. I would hate for you to get it and have an underwhelming experience.

Exactly.  A vintage speaker amp/receiver can be had for around $200 and will make you smile with the HE-6 out of the speaker taps.

Thanks, its power specs seems a little overkill.

 Does it need a pre-amp?

I really doubt that those vintage amplifiers can provide clean and quick changing signal. They seem old. I think, many of their Capacitors are in bad working condition. That's why I hesitate to go to those old amps.
@Oregonian I'm searching ebay for your signature. It seems that you are a vintge lover
Another question, is Emotiva xpa-200 successor of Emotiva UPA-200I've found one upa-200 used for around 255$.

When I had the Emotiva the volume was at 3 o'clock or about 80% to have average listening levels on the HE6 but with my Sansui AU 505 (12 watts) at 10 o'clock it brought better sound with the same listening level. There is something about vintage amp watts and voltage that passes most amps in the same price range with modern amps. As long as the components are in good condition on the inside of the vintage amp you should have a better experience in my opinion. The AU 505 was about $150 and served well for about 2 years before selling it off. You have to be very picky and ask a lot of questions on eBay because I've gotten crap and jems on there with vintage gear.

It is a helmet which has one very drove output but which is splendid with a good amplifier hifi.

I've been trawling through local classifieds and came across two interesting options, though both are considerably larger and heavier than what I want... massive transformers in both, maybe 40 lbs each.
1) Fostex Laboratories 300... 100 W/ch, $300
2) Yorkville Audiopro AP1200... 225 W/ch (in class A I think), $200, or get two and bridge into monoblocks because I'm crazy?

Argh or just stick with my little class D amps because deskspace is nice

Yorkville Audiopro AP1200 is too drawing for the helmet.

I'm going to repeat propoman here... I have no idea what "helmet" means. What is your native language?
