Can't choose different sizes, though. I think they went with the newer design.

Lol, I just realised I have heard the same album (phillip glass - the hours) 2 or 3 times now. 3 times I think, not sure, though. Those hd800 are good with classical stuff, can't deny that..

Ahh! The right cup stopped working on my HE-500! I'm really hoping/thinking it's just a cable issue. 
 
Are there any affordable options besides buying another for $60? (I'd hate to buy another exact stock one to have it die on me again)

Just swap the left/right cable ends. That should tell you right away if it's the cable or the driver.

Also if the cable is even slightly loose it can lose contact so just tightening it might fix it.
