HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

As you might imagine one gets used to the he-400 treble. I did when having it for a couple of weeks.
Seems like the tizzy fatiguing treble of the HE400's is not natural- perhaps even an unhealthy way of listening to music. After getting Jergpads (and before getting HE500) I spent considerable time each day listening to the 400's- in spite of the treble. After a few days, I noticed my ears becoming very sensitive to loud sounds. Wasn't long after I bought the HE500 and haven't looked back since. FWIW, I don't listen to electronic music and most of my music is not audiophile level recordings.

I don't think I would adjust to it. Not a problem, got me a pair of HE-500's.

I guess because they are coming out with new models of the 400 and 500, the current stock is on sale at a pretty good price. Question for those who have heard or better yet, owned both. Is the 500 worth the extra $200. My dilemma is this, if I buy the 500 that will be my whole budget gone, if I get the 400 I will have enough left to get an amp (thinking about the Schiit Vali). I do have an amp so it isn't like I wont have one at all, but it is pretty old and may not be at its best any more.

I think I would wait a couple months and go for the 400i if I were in your shoes. That saves you $100 over the HE500 so you can get the Vali. The 400i is supposed to sound like the 500 with much better comfort and less power needed to drive it. And this is from someone who has owned the 400 and is in love with 500

I bit the bullet and ordered the HE-500's which will be here on the 18th. Even though the HE-560's are around the corner, who knows what they'll sound like whereas the HE-500's are available now and considered a great phone.

My wife calls me a smartarse, maybe she knows something I don't.

Oh, I think that's a given.  At least you married "up"

My brats would've been mad if I didn't take the plunge before their arrival. Heck, it's been over 30 years without an upgrade.

If I think about a newer model, I'll be found dead in the morning with my HE-500's still on.

Remember..the 339 sounds more warmer then the 337.. The 337 is more SS sounding and faster..and on top of that..mine was modified with better parts..and ofcourse it all depends on the tubes used in those amps..in my experience the best tubes for the he500 were:
Power: TS 5998 or bendix 6080wb with graphite plates
Drivers: TS sj7gt mesh plates and the RCA 5693 red hots.

But am glad some of u guys can have the oportunity of listening to these amps as they really sound good..
Have fun comparing!!
Paulo

Oftopic: i got pics of the latest revision of my new amp...i dont have a clue what he put in the powersupply..its all in black....all secret stuff  he completely changed the powersupply as far i can see :D. Soo the inside is done now..no alterations anymore.. :p

It Just passed the bench test this morning...its measured at 5,28watts into 50ohm..yep 5,28.. Not 5 not 6 but 5,28... I get a feeling this dude is a perfectionist..

I love the stainless steel connectors on the front for the dual xlr! Top will be stainless also..front will be glossy (mirror) black.. Until now i love what i see...

I don't think he wanted to wait even longer for that upgrade. You think that comes with a DeLorean?

Big lolz!!
Nope..its better built then that car so i doubt it would be included :D i tried to ask them to include a Fisker..but to no avail... I didnt spend enough with them i am guessing :D

Now i think of it..its possible they used this kind of powersupply to power ' the back to the future delorean' to go through times :D
