Still haven't had any problems, and I've owned my he500 For... What, like 4 years or something? Honestly, even if it breaks, I can just order the new headbands from hifiman, or ask a friend of mine that still owns a spare old hifiman headband to buy.

The HE500 plastic fell apart once but other than that (replacements sent from hifiman) no problems. I was one of the first customers so have had them for awhile now.

Anyone experiencing channel imbalance? I've had my pair for over a year and it's always bugged me a bit, with the left side seemingly being slightly louder. It also shows up in some of the measurements I've done...

If you're using stock pads their thickness can vary and they can sit uneven with the mounting rings. Try switching the pads to see if the imbalance gets corrected.

I've tried every pad there is, currently using the HM5 angled velour, which measure and sound better than Audeze vegans - you can see my measurements earlier in this thread. I will admit that with certain pads it's less obvious, but still there nonetheless, even though it's not extreme. After seeing Tyll's measurements with the drivers matching very well, mine are disappointing. Guess I could always try to fix it with software, just wondering if anyone else has a similar issue, maybe I'm just unlucky.

Planning to buy some pads during the ali 11/11 sale. Cheap enough to buy a couple and try them. Think I'll try angled velour and hybrids. Only can find them in oval. The angled are smaller, 40x70 inner diameter instead of 50x70 for the hybrids, I guess that's ok?

Hybrids don't sound good imo, don't measure well either. All Brainwavz are a bit of a tight fit, you have to stretch them out - just slowly stretch one small section at a time moving circularly. Only takes maybe 5 minutes, it's easy. Depending on how well you stretched them, you'll have to use a little bit of force putting in the last part of plastic connector, but they definitely fit.

Where the stock velour is a little too harsh in the treble, the HM5 velour is a bit smoother. They also have linear sub bass extension like the vegans, but don't sound nearly as distant (a bit muddy even with the vegans). They bring out more detail and sound cleaner than the focus pads as well, while at the same time having better bass extension. Grill mod makes them sound even better

Thanks for the info.
I'll think about the hybrids, since they are so cheap I may try them just to see for myself.

What's the grill mod? I guess it's describe somewhere in these 1000 pages? lol

Grill mod is here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/hifiman-regrilling-mod.619447/

Angled velour and the hybrid are the same price from what I see, regular velour is cheaper and sound almost identical to the angled. I prefer the angled though because it increases the sound stage a bit.

What's the most powerful speaker amp people are using with the HE-500 without resistors in the path?

I'm going to be trying the Keces S3 with S125 power amp with them, I think the HE-500 will be fine direct from the speaker taps.

Ive used everything from a 55wpc(into 8ohms) Sansui 881 up to a 125wpc Kenwood Eleven GX from speaker taps w/o resistors on my headphones.Although the HE-6 absolutely needed the taps treatment I didnt find the HE-500 to benefit much from going out of the taps vs. HP jack of same vintage receivers.
