the comfort is better than the focus pads and the sound is lusher with better bass impact

I'd like to report sound quality change from average to mind-blowing.
TLDR: I upgraded to MacOS High Sierra, and that's when it all changed.

I've had HE-500 for a while, and it sounded muddy and underwhelming most of the time with NFB-11 and MacBook Pro. High gain reduced muddiness somewhat, but it also reduced details. Now it sounds mind-blowing. It is airy, clear, transparent and detailed, and the stage is great. I also own HD650, and it didn't sound muddy, so I thought the problem was with HE-500, I even thought I'd got a defected pair. I changed cable, changed pads, but HE-500 only got slightly better.

Running NFB-11 -> Little Dot MKIII -> HE-500, and it is truly mind-blowing now. Need to see what change it did to HD650 too.

I did set up bitrate before, but that didn't change much.

Surprising. I have NFB 15, XD 05, LD MKiii and the last is what I like least paired to my HE 500 but I like most with my HD600. Im wondering, what tubes do you have in your LD? I have mullards, voshkod, el yugo as drivers and russian 6h6p as power tubes.

I have stock tubes that came with it. I think the large ones are Russian. It sounds great w/o LD too.

Sorry I don't understand...what in MacOS High Sierra caused your system to sound different?

I don't know, perhaps they reworked resampling?

Mac is the source for DAC, and if the quality of a source is better, it's going to sound better.

HE-500 with newer style Hifiman headband (also no model number on this headband makes it more sleek). Whilst I was changing the cups over, I broke one of the SMC connectors, and I had some new ones but also some mono 3.5mm sockets and decided that they were a perfect fit so now they have 3.5mm sockets installed. Currently with HM5 angled pleather but they are lacking some sparkle so need to pad roll a little.

Why are Ether Flow pads so expensive... I have some Ethers on loan and the pads sound incredible on the HE-500 :D

what about compared to stock Velour?

As every pad I have tried seems to take away the airy, spacial stock sound and make them muddled and a little too full. Except for Ether Flow pads, but they are wayyy out of budget.

First impressions are v.good compared to velours, give me two more days to be 100 percent sure.
