Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

I'm not at home right now but on Thursday I'll find a couple of tunes that I feel have great bass impact on the HE400i and post it here so that you can check them out.

What source are you using?

This track takes a few excursions into the deep end.

Regardless of the lack of overall legitimacy of percentage ratings I'll give mine ha. Dacmagic xs 78%, Meridian explorer 2 80%, Fostex hp-a8 90%

Oh not forgetting the Sony xperia compact.... 45%. Just weak. It works but I don't think you'd settle on it.

Try Bjork black lake and Notget for bass, and Black sun empire. Can hear a superior soundstage, bass weight, impact everything really on the fostex, nicer sounding piano and drums also than the USB dacs to me. But I bet there is more to come on nicer kit. Out of interest, 400i use around ten clicks more volume on the fostex than my shure 1540 and T-90 used. Don't use your phone, these headphones will be a shadow of what they are capable of, if you have to do that buy different cans imo.

Just EQ a little or upgrade your chain. With the 400i some times are heard some are heard and felt. It's there, just not hammering your eardrum. As far as this percentage system goes.. these planar cans are very sensitive to chain/EQ so.. dig in.

Hi,out of interest what eq would you or anyone else use on a Macbook pro it's not new,im using tidal Hi-fi. I'm new to Macs and the one my flatmate put on was so bad i couldn't use it, tiny. Adjustments made distortion horrible. It is gone. Can't remember the name.
Help appreciated.

Realy.. As I just ordered Fulla 2 as dac and magni 2 to my soon incoming he400i i read all the bad posts about the pairing :frowning2:

Should I undo and get something else?

Is it so bad that I should do something here?

For an according to audiobot9000 this is best matched https://www.audiobot9000.com/match/hifiman/he-400i/with/hifiman/ef-2a

I dont have much knowledge this is my first step looking for "mid-fi?" so really want a good start :)

I haven't seen many praise the EF-2a here on this thread but there was one person who liked the DAC section of if IIRC.

I just listened to Cold War Kids Hotel Anywhere through the Galaxy S5, then the m9XX. Galaxy S5 sounded more congested and almost more full but not more clear, almost like the nose floor was raised. The background guitar sounded more distorted, less clear with less clearly produced notes. m9XX sounds much more clean and clear with more snap to percussion instruments with imaging being much, much better and noticeable. The clarity has the effect of bringing vocals more up front.

Powerwise, I'm one click from max on S5 and about 68 on m9XX with PLENTY of more headroom to go. Another disadvantage of the S5 is that the volume increments are not small enough to find that sweet spot volume.

agree that the S5 is quite bad for driving headphones like the HE400i, and I agree that the volume increments are way to large.

Please tell me I'm not stupid and my set of 400i's do indeed have 2 left cups.

edit: sorted - they are indeed 2 left cups - support @ hifiman contacted - will await a response.

@raband Hilarious but unfortunate!

@evgenetic Did the problem with the treble issue persist?

@Nepomuk As many USB dacs/amps struggle with the 400i, or the synergy is outright horrible, driving them out of most smartphones will be disappointing imo.

@Presto Along with the questions on your other/previous headphones, the 400i might sound even thinner depending on what you're driving it with, and if they're your first planars - as it takes some time to get accustomed to the sound.

Loads of things happening when you're bedridden for a few days due to a cold :p

This sucks and all but, seriously made my day lol. I love my HE series cans but damn does their QC need work. Good news is once you've got a good set it may very well be bulletproof. At least mine have been.

They sounds fantastic - have gotten me to seriously look at TOTL planars.

Will see how CS deal with this issue as to whether nor not the next one is an HE or not lol
