Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

I have no experience with Linn Classik but according to the manual  (found online on ftp://ftp.linn.co.uk/Manual/CLASSIK_MUSIC_original_(E).pdf) its head amp has output current limit 60mA so it should drive HE-400i to fairly loud volume levels.

HE-400i (headphone impedance: 35 Ohm, headphone sensitivity: 93.0 dB SPL/mW)

However, in comparison to HD 600, HE-400i is, as a headphone with below-average sensitivity (93.0 dB SPL/mW), more current hungry and certainly needs amplification able to deliver these loads. On the other hand HD 600 is, as a headphone with high impedance (300 Ohm) more demanding of voltage.  Nevertheless, try HE-400i with Linn Classik and let us know how you like this combo.

Yes, I believe this. I just received mine.

Probably due to their relatively low sensitivity, the 400i needs some juice.

I need to crank my Oppo HA-2 up more for these than the AKG K7Xx, which are a tough-to-drive 62Ohm. Sensitivity is a better measure of drivability than output impedance is.

That's pretty much the reason I'm asking... I was wondering if it was a viable replacement for the 650.

I've never once thought to myself 'damn wish I could rock them 650's right now'

For ME, they were a viable replacement, and then some.

I could drive 650's from my 2015 Chromebook Pixel.

400i's I'm all the way to max volume and feel like I need a little more.

Luckily the iDSD works just fine on linux, and that has enough juice to send 400i to the moon.

I have not done much comparison. My first impression is that 400i has more bass than 600 and the sound is a little darker. I would say it resembles 650 quite a lot. I bought it as a supplement of 600, mainly for large scale music and male vocal. For small scale and female I still prefer 600. Also I found piano sounds more natural on 600. These are just my first impression after listening on my 400i for one evening. By the way, I only listen to classical and I think both headphone are good for classical.

i find the 400i nothing like the hd650. i say its closer to the hd600.
the 400i has quite a deep soundstage. imo both the 600 and 650 have better sounding midrange.
400i has better instrumental seperation though. soundstage is about the same as them.
its got better bass than both the 600 and 650. tighter and more extended. but 650 still has more quantity though.
but i still like my 650 a bit more. atleast out of a valhalla 2. but 400i is the better performer.
never heard it out of a lyr so i don't know. i can call 400i and hd600 neutral but i cant call 650 neutral.
i heard people calling 650 neutral but i find even k701 more neutral than 650.
i still prefer senns midrange even though 400i mids are actually satisfying enough.
but all of this is just my opinion. well you know, just saying.
and to up my post count yay

I agree the 400i is closer to the HD600 than 650 however I don't think your hearing everything the 400i's are capable of because I don't think the OTL Lyr2 is a good match even though Schiit says it is.I challenge every 400i owner to hear them with a properly designed OTC Tube amp.IMO with the right amp the 400i shows a clean set of heals to BOTH the 600&650!

the only amp i heard the 400i out of is the matrix m stage, valhalla 2, and the built in amp of the m9xx.
so far the only reason the 650s won me over is because it sounds better out of valhalla 2 and i tend to listen to alot of vocally stuff.
i really like to find ways to make my headphones sound as good as possible within my budget range. but im not sure whats a good 400i match.

I was always a Senn man. They were the only cans I could stand with SS amps. The 400i's are my first Planar Mag cans(I do have a lot of ears on with Maggie speakers though)& until I got the APPJ amp with the NOS tubes I would have said the 600's & 400i's were neck & neck with the 650's having a slightly richer midrange. The combination of OTC tube amp with the NOS Mullard tubes(1953&1959)takes the neutrality & bass of the 600's,combines the midrange richness of the 650's & adds a touch of HD598 Imaging & SoundStaging!

I have been using my laptop and Fiio E12, sound great!

When I pair up Fiio E12 with iPhone 6S Plus / 6 Plus / 5. The sound is is not as good as pairing it with my laptop. I believe iPhone internal amplifier over amplify 8KHz.

Hence, I am looking at a good portable player which has good sound output that can pair well with Fiio E12 and HE400i.

Any good recommendation?

Is it posdible to buy a high quality 2.5mm at the Headphone end to a 3.5mm or 6.35mm at source end? The reason is I do not want to compromise on the audio quality when adding a 3meter extension cable to the HE-400i. Also looks better having one cable. Surprised hifi man do not sell it as an option.

This is exactly how I listen to mine with my laptop and E12.  I too noticed quite a difference between my Macbook Air amp and my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 amp. The laptop sounds better to me and there's distortion through the phone at times.

The 400i is such a good headphone for me. I really enjoy and look forward to listening to music with it.

I just received the HE-560 yesterday and auditioned them last night for about ninety minutes. Wow. Both of these Hifiman HPs are terrific to my ears.

Have you looked at the FiiO players, such as the X1?

Very easy to find a (short) cable - just look for cables made for HD700. I found cables on Amazon between 1 and 2 meters for around $35. For a single, long cable, you may need to look on eBay or buy from a custom cable builder.
