Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

No pre-release 400i's for this thread ? The 400'is seem to have been neglected any spotlight compared to 560s over last 2 months.... Nothing almost.

I vote Matt or Beaver316 to get a pre-release if that suddenly looks possible. Both have contributed a lot to the 400 thread by way of helping newbies.

The 400 thread is one of the most active on this site and the 400 tribe are just as fanatical about the entry-level HFM as the 500/560 crowd.

The 400i will be more focused on after the 560 is released.  HiFiMAN wants to put focus on the 560 (with reason).

I did not unfortunately.  But they do have to fix the issues in the 560 before they can do the 400i.  The baffle fix and maybe even the housing issue may have been present in the original 400i model (that's been kept under wraps).  We know the baffle issue was actually present in most HiFiMAN models...

Tinyman is correct. We are focusing on getting the HE-560 perfect and into production HE-400i will follow.

Here at the Newport Show, response to both models has been excellent.

Best estimate on timing is HE-560 in production in June and HE-400i in July. Those are targets and subject to change.

HE-400i sounds quite different then HE-400. In hindsight, it probably should have had its own model #.

We actually discussed about this very thing in a recent private meet haha.

We decided that HE400i should have been named HE450 instead. HE560's name kind of makes sense, since the 5 signifies its "tier", and the 6 foreshadows its sound signature (quite similar to HE6). If HE400i is gonna be tuned to be HE500-esque, then HE450 would fit with this guideline.

Never too late to change that XD  Especially since it's yet to be released. Unless you've already started making boxes for it :p

So hopefully we start getting some impressions finally on these headphones since the show has started. Hard to believe that after all this time we still haven't gotten any real impressions on these cans other than the generic "it's tuned like an HE-500".

Yes in this case it is too late and a change like that would cause more confusion that we don't need.

The i will have to do and everyone will know it is a significantly improved phone over HE-400.

Our focus has to be on getting them to market asap.

I for one am really interested in the 400is. The reason though, is that I kind of believe planars should best be used as 'fun' cans, based on my experience with HE-5LEs, and I tend to prefer dynamic headphones for serious listening.
This makes me look forward to the HE400i, hoping that they will hit the point where (sound+convenience)/price is maxed.
