Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

Im heavily interested in the Sundara as a replacement for my HE-560 as my reference planar can. The 560 yoke issue struck me and thus im selling it to mate as that is to much baggage. Im a bit of a skeptic when it comes to HFM build. I have not heard it as of yet but it looks to be slightly brighter on measurements compared to the 560 due to less bass which is a bit concerning since the 560 were maybe just a hair bright. Can anyone chime in on how the bass impact is and if the treble comes off as grating? Is the impact closer to the 400i 2.5mm or the 560.

I also would love to see pictures of the diaphragm and magnet array so I can make uninformed speculations

Just listened to Al Di Meola - Paradisio from Six String II the Burning Sessions and man did the 400i just impress me.
If anyone gets a chance it's well worth the listen on this hp.

Thanks for bringing up Al Di Meola, haven't listened to his albums in awhile: Casino, Elegant Gypsy and Land of the Midnight Sun. Going on my playlist for the night

Today I received my Xduoo XD-05 with a Burson V5i-d op-amp ready to swap in. Put the Burson in and this is the very best I have heard the 400i's perform. Better than with a Cayin C5 and better than with the iFi iCan SE. Soundstage is really good now, especially width. Sound is detailed but solid in the low end. Everything sounds fantastic - classical music is close to being at a concert. I was pleased with the 400i's before - now I'm in love with them. Astounding pairing. Haven't tried the DAC side of things, this is just working as an amp with the Fiio X5iii as source.

For anyone who, like me, was disappointed with the soundstage - this is the amp (and op-amp) for you to pair with these headphones. You do need the Burson though, it makes all the difference.

Anyone paired it up with ifi black label? May I know how does it sounds like?

That's a great match. The iFi smooths out the treble a bit and makes the headphones a touch warmer. Adding the bass boost gives them some serious low-end. In fact, with the bass boost and ZMF Ori pads, the 400i is a legit basshead can. I'd highly recommend the pairing.

How about WM1A? Is if strong enough to drive He400i?

Yes. I tried that pairing at a local meet-up and they worked very well together. The WMA1A also drove some Focal Elears, Campfire Audio Cascades, and the MrSpeakers AEON Cs quite well, IIRC. As with most things IMO, the 400i sounds better with a dedicated amp, but that DAP will work very well as a portable option, especially if you can go balanced.
