Not the signature, but the amount of power going into it, no?

I mean Schiit advises against using the Valhalla with it because of its output impedance.

I believe it's because the Valhalla is made for HIGH impedance headphones, and won't feed planars a lot of power, since they are low impedance.

I already did this comparison, but with the higher up 650 (which they are more on level with). Bass oriented music is the 400's strong set, it just does it very well, world apart from a 598. the 400's are like a less colored senn with excellent low end response and lots of high-treble information.
That's pretty much what it sounds like. I can't help but think there is a better amp  out there for the 400's. Or maybe I should just give into speaker taps.

Try the Lyr with the HE-400s, I just love the combo.

I'd rather save up for the Audio-GD SA-31. :D

10 watts at 40ohm!

The Lyr has 6watts at 32ohm... so the SA-31 has like almost double the power of the Lyr, is fully solid-state, and costs $50 more (excluding shipping). MUST HAVE!

I will stick with tubes, but  we all hear different. Power benefits the HE-400, not for loud listening but for dynamics.

What are the HE400 like for electronic music like drum & bass, dubstep and breaks? Is the bass substantial enough? Is there plenty of sub bass when needed?

I have these on my shortlist. Would I be ok running them straight from my laptop, iphone and Nexus 7? I also have an E11 - would that be enough to power them?

The HE400 is awesome for almost everything electronic in my very limited experience so far. Bass is punchy and accurate. It's not going to make your ears vibrate, but it's nice. The E11 should be just fine for them.

Put on some bass boost, and they will make your ears vibrate, lol.

Like others have said, the HE400s and electronic music are a match made in heaven.

This is really a nice review I really liked this

Thank you!! I should really do some edits. I wrote that just after I got them...maybe a week and was just really excited about the sound signature. I wanted to share it with others as it was very new then. Now were are on r3...hopefully r4 soon.
