Nice! I love my OG 400s for sure. Such a fun pair of headphones. The grill mods and pad changes really do make it a totally different. I run mine off a Schiit Lyr most often, but I've never tried it off a full (non-hybrid) tube amp so come back and let me know how it works out for you. BTW, what tube amp are you running it off of?

I think that's just about the best $150 you can spend, and you will appreciate the XLR cable.Just got a clean and perfect condition HE400.. just do the grill mod and change the pad to velour... it already sound better than he400i... waiting for the balanced xlr cable arrive so can plug to my tube amplifier... my other headphone is hd800....i got it for $150... what you guys think?

I have the HE400SE. Back in 2015 I had the HE400i. This thread was an interesting read. Honestly I never found either HE400 I owned to be a particularly interesting can to listen to and my 400SEs rarely come out of storage. HD600 for life!

I am under the impression we're discussion the original HE400 (no SE, no i, no suffix). That can, for all its quirks, has some of the quickest and slammiest bass there is, period. Let alone for $100-$200.I have the HE400SE. Back in 2015 I had the HE400i. This thread was an interesting read. And if you are capable of modding + EQing properly, the HE400 reaches ridiculous levels of performance esp for the cost. It is kind of a shame the HE400 is forgotten now.I am under the impression we're discussion the original HE400 (no SE, no i, no suffix). Looks like you're in for some fun. The OG HE400s are such a fun headphone to listen to. Throw whatever your favorite Lambskin/leather pads are on there, put on some hex grills, maybe do the sorbothane mod, and you end up with a headphone that kicks like a mule and performs well beyond it's pricetag so you get fun and performance all for a very modest cash layout and the time for a few simple mods and a pad swap. That's hard to beat...

One side of the headband broke off (left side). I'm surprised it even hold on for so long.
I think I'll try it with superglue first, but if that doesn't hold/help I might try to attach one of these replacement headbands from Hifiman.
I'm using a DT 770 Pro 80ohm for now but, for me, the HE-400 is way above it in sound quality, openness and quality of bass. The DT770 is bass heavy sure, but not the same as the HE-400. The HE-400 bass feels more controlled and deeper.

Since it's been about 11 years since I started this thread, I thought that I'd chime in to say hello. I've long since moved on from the he400, but admit that it was this headphone that was my gateway drug to getting serious about the hobby. It was the bass that sucked me in to the sound of the he400. It was certainly a fun headphone. But maybe even more so, what I really enjoyed was hanging out in this thread and getting to know the people who also enjoyed the he400. Over time I got to meet many of them in person at local headphone get-togethers. It was a good ride. Enjoy the music!

I took another listen to those headphones I gifted my father-in-law a few years back, and man, the clarity and space they offer is top-notch, almost hitting reference level. It’s a bummer though, they’ve got this weird profile with a super sharp peak at the 1Khz frequency. But hey, tweak that with an equalizer, drop it about 6 or 7 db, and the sound quality goes through the roof!

Well almost 3 weeks further and so far so good. I got some superglue and it's holding on fine, you don't see a thing. One side of the headband broke off (left side). I'm surprised it even hold on for so long.

It broke off in a good way, clean parts which were easy to get back together.
The sound quality is imo so much above the DT770 that I used in the meantime, I guess I just don't like closed headphones and a (for me) boomy bass, the bass in the HE-400 is so much more defined.
Im gonna upgrade the HE400SE. The sound is unbelievably good.
Has anybody found good quality headband, are all HE400 compatible?
Im looking for earpads and headbands and also the same exact model I bought/old version
I will buy one more HE400SE, the pairing on my Audio-gd R-1N is ultra realistic drums feels real in the room. Thick textured sound, HE1000V2 or my Susvara does not bring this kind of texture even though they are more resolving/detailed.

Here is what I found
Dekoni
https://dekoniaudio.com/product/dek...ds-for-hifiman-he-series-headphones-and-more/
https://dekoniaudio.com/product/elite-hybrid-ear-pads-for-hifiman-he-headphones/
If the last one fits Im ordering it.
For headbands I need help finding some good ones
——
Im trying to find out what model I have
Warranty papers say 2202270

I took the risk ordered Dekoni Hybrid Elite for the HE400SE. They cost the same price as the headphone
