What does lean mean in sound? Never really got that one.

HE500 sounds thicker/lusher than HE400 by default (just a difference in the driver tuning). HE400 has a leaner bass, leaner midrange, leaner treble. HE500 with the full Jergpads (including the outer port holes and open vents) still sounds a fair bit lusher and more at-ease than HE400 with stock pleathers.
HE500 + velours though gets a bit too bright and thin IMO. It becomes as fatiguing as HE400s (quite bright up top), but with a thinner bottom end than HE400; as you might imagine, not great.
It means less or in some cases thinner.
I must disagree here. I don't find the HE-500 with the velours fatiguing at all, nor thin. It sounds fuller/thicker than the HE-400 actually. Of course, that's my opinion. Since we all hear things differently, YMMV.

I'm in the same boat the he500 with velour doesn't sound fatiguing like the he400. The he500 mids sounds thicker and the treble is smooth, this is of the lyr.
Get the jergpads for your HE-400. Problem solved.
I'm using TM raven's "balanced" iTunes EQ for the 400 -- WOW. It really brings the treble in nicely. I'm also experiencing more natural female vocals and mids in general TBH, possibly due to the flatter FR bringing the overtones more in line?
I still use his "what sibilance" setting for most electronic music because the bass is more emphasized though
I've since updated my HE-400 EQ settings to be more to my liking. I brought up the idea of linking the major impressions, comparisons and reviews involving the HE-400 from within this thread to be as part of the initial post but no success yet.
I don't find the HE-4 to do EDM better than the HE-400, but it does everything else better, since it's more balanced and airy. The HE-400 has a deepness/rawness to it's bass that the HE-4 doesn't touch (though it has fantastic bass extension)
Just PM me the formatted content TMRaven and I can paste it into the 2nd post.
