HiBy RS8 flagship Darwin R2R Android DAP -- Class A -- news and impressions thread

Even if RS8 could upsample to DSD it wouldn't sound anything like the 1ZM2. Very different players with different technology. RS8 is much faster and more powerful, with system-wide EQ and a smooth R2R sound, while the Sony has its own strengths. I'd say the two are more complementary than competitive, and that the best pairing ultimately depends as much on the IEM as it does the player.
There is a review online of the RS8 by a very well respected reviewer named "twister" who says the Sony and RS8 sound very very similar. Biggest difference in sound being the Sony has more sparkly Treble and RS8 more rounded; but he seems to imply they are very much in the same family of sound. Regarding power- if your going use over the ear headphones like LCD-4Z or Meze Elite, you will need the RS8 power. If only for iem, Sony has all you need (plus)- so why carry around a much heavier and larger dap? The value to me of the RS8 is if you also want to listen to easy to drive headphones which the Sony just cannot optimally drive do to being less powerful.

My question- is how far from a top of the line desktop system is the RS8 in driving high sensitivity over ear headphones? If it can get 90% of the way there- I may consider dumping my huge desktop system. These daps will never drive low impedance headphones like a proper desktop system. So we are talking LCD-4z, Meze Elite, and several others which are not very power hungry.

I’m thinking the same thing. I might use the rs8 and just keep my two tube amps

The harmonic controller... adds harmonics to the sound in a way that hopefully warms up the sound like a tube amp is supposed to warm up the sound with harmonics. Strictly speaking of course this is a form of added distortion. I'm curious to hear how people like it and what settings they like to have it at.
I've been listening in NOS mode for a few weeks now and really like the sound. I recently downloaded Neutron and upsampled everything 4x and I think thee sound of my 44.1k FLAC files are improved. So I thought I'd go back to the Hiby App and I turned off "NOS". I've been working through the available filters and I quite like #10: it sounds a little more "resolving" on 44.1k material. Subtle difference though. Does anyone know what the "specs" are for these filters? I'm assuming the default, #1 and #2 are linear-phase brick wall variants. #5 looks unfamiliar... Once out of NOS mode I find I reduce the harmonics setting to achieve the same warmth in the sound. From say 60 to 40 or less... Curious if other peoples experience is similar.

Very disappointed, it's been a week now that my RS8 has a problem with the 4.4 output.
A very strong blister appears when I change tracks with a different frequency totally independent of the volume of the player. I contacted Hiby on Wednesday they asked me where I bought my RS8. I answered them on Friday with sending the invoice and since then no response. Is it normal that answers with Hiby are so long.
I had a problem with my DX300 Max Ti, IBasso had sent me a return label during the day and in 5 days my DAP had been exchanged.

I'm sorry about this. It may be, that they are uncertain how to proceed because they are wondering if it is a software or hardware fault. I will ask them about this tomorrow morning.

Where did you buy the RS8?

Thank you for your answer. I bought it on the Musicteck website.
I recorded from my IPhone from a FirAudio Xe6 connected to my RS8 in 4.4 the noises I hear when changing tracks and when I remove the 4.4 jack. If you want I can send you the audio file if you are interested for the diagnosis.

You should receive the same reply from headquarters soon, but we believe this is a hardware fault and you may contact MusicTeck your seller to have the unit exchanged. We will inform MusicTeck of the same. 👍🏻

Thank you for your intervention which greatly accelerated the return procedure :beerchug:
Andrew from MusicTeck contacted me to send my RS8 back to him. I fell badly, he has a lot of work because of the CanJam in New York.

Oh, it was what had already happened, I am merely informing you of the same one step ahead of them. In no sense did your case require my special intervention to get going; I hope that doesn't make you feel any less special as a customer of our premium product
