Anyone have better pictures of the guts of this thing? Is that R2R dac a generic module, or a custom in-house job? I think HiFiman or Cayin have something similar… (is the HiBy sourcing from same OEM???)

https://www.hear.audio/2021/05/14/cayins-new-r01-r2r-ladder-dac-module-for-the-n6ii-dap/
The RS2 (and RS6) R2R resistor ladders are built using discrete high precision resistors. The Cayin R01 module also uses a discrete resistor ladder. (24bit Discrete R-2R Ladder Resistor Network)

The HifiMan R2R2000 uses old (launched 1998 ?) , out of stock Texas Instruments R2R chipsets: PCM1702 (20 bit) and PCM1704K (24bit)

Below is the RS2

Wrong card slot ?
Tried both slots, both updates and even found a fat32 card to try it on as Fiio used to have issues with big cards on updates all still not working...... Then I actually read the instructions properly and it's not the zip file you just extract the update file 🤣, updated straight away. So used to other players OS doing the unzipping for me.
Was a 4gb fat32 card I found .... Ah those were the days when they were considered a big deal and you had about 100 albums in your player and thought you were king of thre hill 👍

Mine is going to Vienna, in the end I could not live with the gui limitations plus I prefer the sound of my Sony players and their gui suits me. This does not mean that I think the RS2 is a poor dap, it is a very nice dap, it's just not the one for me

I usually use DAP to play local files randomly when I doing my two-hour daily jogging. The only thing I care is the sound quality. I guess I will choose RS2 eventually, right now I am carrying WM1A and DX160 in rotation.

It should do nicely in that role

About R2R being the craze....
Why doesn't any company try to replicate Philips' original multi-bit technology ? (HINT: it's not R2R, and was what Philips used until they also marketed Bitstream)
Also, what is the stock situation on new-old-stock multi-bit DACs? Seems like a lot of Chinese kit products (on Ali or eBay) have quite lot to sell as part of whole units, just PCBs, or even raw DAC chips. E.g., TDA1387, which is multibit, SOIC size, low power ... ideal for portables.

Schiit's multibit is not the same?

It was implied by @alphaman that Philips' original multi-bit is different from, say Schiit audio's multibit DAC. BTW, when I googled, I only found Philips' multibit screw drivers :)

Clearly, you folks need to better use search engines. If you don’t know about audio dac technology— its history and evolution—y’all will foreva be throwin’ $$ at whateva the market wants you to REBUY.
