When I was a kid we carried around full sized Boom Boxes with our headphones! And we liked it!!! 
When you were a kid, the iPod wasn't out! :p

I'm 25 and I owned one of those. Man these are the very definition of "built like a tank". It's literally waterproof. There's a seal inside the door and all. I remember working in the fields in the summer as a kid with it attached to my belt, covered in mud. Lol, good times.
 
But the headphones that came with it were just... eww.

Totally makes sense you would have used one.
 
Tape was pretty much the only option for portable music that could withstand constant motion, bumps, bangs, and the elements until ~2005.  Even after the digital player revolution began in the late 90's it was seven years before they made one that could withstand both the elements and constant jostling.
