Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution

eBay.
You can buy new desktop amps, but in my experience for comparable price they don't have the power that the old receivers do.
Of course it also depends on which headphone you end up choosing too.

Do you think Fostex TH900mk2 Premium Reference Headphones are good for my music preferences?
Which others do you recommend that I can purchase immediately?

The E-MU Teaks are probably your best bet for metal of the various Fostex bio-dynamic driver variants. I've only owned the TH-X00 and the E-MU Teaks, but based on Tyll's impressions here I don't think the TH900mk2 would be great for metal. I think the Teaks can be ordered directly from the manufacturer, but you'd need to email them at enquiry@emu.com

Another option would be the Klipsch Heritage HP-3 at $1200, I've heard good things about them for metal: Link 1, Link 2

I have the V-moda Zn, which is really good at this price point. Only looking to up the quality a bit.

UE900 is fairly old by now, Xcited/2 might well be better

I think that if you want to spend 300 USD or more, you can consider Dunu Falcon-C as well.

Some of those Chinese IEMs perform way better at 100 USD than many IEMs used to perform at 200 - 300 USD, there the market is really fiery and the thirst for upgrade / improve made some companies create IEMs that really have a good price / value ratio.

Now, as to which works best with metal, what are you using as a headphone? I like my metal with strong sub-bass and strong treble, so it sounds impactful and explosive, but some might prefer their metal differently

I'm using the V-moda Zn IEM paired with a FiiO X7ii. In high gain mode I set the volume at 90/110 for my hour motorcycle commute.

Not really metal, but listening to the new Dance Gavin Dance album on my German Maestro GMP8.35d's via a Topping D50 > Objective 2 amp. Excellent sounding gear, the 8.35d may be a little dry sounding for some, but the detail and clarity, along with the control of the driver means they handle metal easily.

There are very few things more metal than my beloved dance gavin dance :)

Zx300 balanced to sony ex1000 with a slight bump in the subbass on eq is great with metal, and everything else really.

Project debut carbon > Marantz PM-5005 > speaker taps - 4-pin XLR > HE-500

Still my favourite cans for metal!
