I've seen a couple of Sennheiser Momentums around lately. Any headfier would be able to tell I'm a headfier I think, I walk around with Fiio X3 > Ultrasone Signature DJ's in Newcastle.

  I go to a pretty large university (~40,000 students) and there are an infinite number of Beats. I have seen one guy with a pair of Sennheisers I don't recognize, about four or five ATH-M50s (not including myself or my roommate) and a Grado SR60i (and this is belongs to one of my friends). Everything else can be summed up with Beats, Bose, Apple and Skullcandy. I have to say, I'm rather disappointed that I don't see more quality headphones or IEMs with so many people around me.

Try visiting Head-Fi university... you will be happy and the people there are mostly happy xD if only...

Much more expensive than Harvard and Oxford combined, I might add.
 
But wait...why is there only one subject? If it's a university, it should have courses like Sound Science or something that might land you a place in the R&D dept. of Sennheiser or something like that.

My local polytechnics ( junior college alternative ) only has music engineering or something like that and it only pertains to digital software, music mixing and events song management which I guess is completely irrelevant in this industry.

And yes, in fact I do believe in expensive cables. I just ordered a $205 plussound cable from a local dealer. I can hear differences between cables. IMO: Silver= bright energetic and controlled bass and enhanced soundstage. Copper = warm laid back muddy and very bassy and small soundstage. Copper+silver Hybrid = mix between silver and copper: sounds a tinge warm with a sparkly high end and average if not above average soundstage and bass is on the verge of being uncontrolled.
Silver+gold hybrid= very very very bright and lacking body but excellent soundstage and sub bass when called for. So yes I do believe in cables. But if you're referring to tralucent's $1500 cables and the Crystal piccolino, I believe they are kinda hyped up and that the diff between them and "lesser" cables are fairly minute. Then again, if you want the best or if you have reached the point in your audio hobby where the slightest change greatly impacts your rig, you wouldn't mind paying extra.

You would be looking at either an electrical engineering degree or a science degree in physics (acoustics). my university has an acoustics lab and a professor who writes papers on the physics of musical instruments.
 
FYI a sound engineer is not a real engineer (i.e. someone who's spent years doing maths etc etc). In Australia there's a private college called SAE college which specialises in sound recording/mixing and monitoring. This is what a sound engineer does. That in itself is (should be) quite an important job as learning the proper way to record orchestral and live music is quite hard in and of itself.
