Recently saw a pair of HD650s new from the box. Took a close look at the drivers, and guess what I found ...

The drivers say they are HD580! Anyone can explain this to me? Do HD580,HD600 and HD650 use the same drive model called HD580?

My HD650s do not have that writing on the drivers, I just looked.

It's long been known that the HD580 and 600 share the same drivers.

My understanding is they use different drivers, but Ive never taken apart a 650 to examine it up close.

Same answer as i gave in the other thread:

It's NOT the driver itself, it's accoustic dampening material in the driver housing.
I once started a thread about it:

There's some photos in there, which easily shows the difference. In the first two you can also tell what the driver itself looks like, because it's missing in the photo on the right side.

Sennheiser changed the material from silk to a metal fabric during the production run.
According to an Sennheiser engineer i spoke to, there's no difference between the two accoustically.

The HD580 and the HD600 drivers are the same. The drivers for the HD600 are just better matched. The HD650 used completely different drivers.

As for the 2 pictures Chu posted. The top one has the silver colored (metal base) material for the covering. The bottom one has a black colored (material base) material for the covering. This has no affect on the sound, but the top picture with the metal base covering is a newer HD650. This is also the same with the HD580 and HD600. Once again it makes no sound difference.

I hope that explains everything.

Thanks,
Alex

Those who recently bought HD650s would you guys please take off the earpads and see what the drivers say on them.

I opened a brand new HD650s and again, their drivers say HD580, which is very depressing, HD650s say they are HD580s !

Let's assume for a second the drivers are the same.

What exactly is causing the huge difference? I've never heard the 580's, but there is a very large difference between my HD600's and HD650's.
