Why didn't the Senn rep respond to why the drivers in OP's 650 was stamped 580? I think that's the question....

I was actually referring to the driver appearance, not the grille or enclosure appearance.

My HD580 drivers look more like the HD650 drivers as shown in that pic.

Maybe I haven't made myself clear: The HD650s as shown in my pictures are from the only and one Chinese distributor by name of Artsound (you can find the company in Sennheiser's partner list), so is 100% genuine. Unless the Chinese Sennheiser distributor is selling fake products.

Those who purchased HD650s recently please verify the stamp on your drivers! I have found that many HD650s manufactured recently show HD580 stamp on the drivers.

Why couldn't it be a simple production snafu - whoever mfr's their headphones simply used the wrong drivers in the HD650's for a run or two - either because they ran out of HD650 drivers, or they just screwed up. Once they realized the error, there were just too many out to do anything about it. So they just decided to deny the screw up.

Because the two headphones sound nothing alike. The HD650 isn't a "refinement" like the HD580/HD600 debate, the mids and low are incredibly more pronounced (imho overwhelming, at least on my system) to the point that some people search for ways to bring it under control -- something you never heard of the HD600/HD580. Most people would not notice, but a good number of head-fiers would immediately recognize that something is wrong if they got the wrong driver.

That is, assuming that (1) the HD650 uses different drivers then the HD600/HD580 and (2) the sonic differences are not just due to electronics. At this point that feels like a safe assumption, but you still never know

Made in Ireland, the headphones say. HD580,600 and 650 are the only three headphones that are made in Ireland now. All other models are made in China.

The different drivers really will show their character when you plug the cans in question to a balanced system. There is NO mistake in balanced mode.

I've heard so much about the HD580/600/650 in balanced mode I'm hoping to get a chance to audition someday. It might really be the last stop on the upgrade train for me if it's as good as advertised.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to build a balanced cMoy circuit just to get a sample.

Is that a fact? The part description says, "HD580, HD600", there is no any mentioning of HD650. I'd be very surprised if HD600 and HD650 share the same driver, as they sound quite different and have identical enclosure design; where the difference comes from then if not from the driver.
