I thought the HD580 was a significant step above my HD595 even when unamped. 

 
The 580/600/650 are in a totally different league than the 595's and the rest of the 5 series (excepting the 580 of course).
 
I cannot understand those that say the differences are minor. but maybe I am just hard of hearing
