To early to tell at the minute, but iv not heard the magni  1st edition, I have the magni 2, and I used them today after they arrived, they sounded good to me, then again my 325i also sound good.
But ill try and use them both and see what I think later....I know the 225i can be used without amp, but I will use them with the magni 2 .

I just finished building a SennGrado last night, wish I had found out about it before.  This thing has a killer sound, bass like a HE-400/LCD-2f (not as low but with a good kick) and highs like my HE-560 (really smooth and extended) to my ears.

When I first got my SR-225e's a little over a month ago I liked the sound so much ended up getting a RS2e also.

Best amp that I found with my Grado's have been my Project Ember with a bugle boy tube, brings out the bass better and tames the highs from becoming harsh.

This looks like an old thread, but I love my 225i's so bloody much I had to add to it. They bring a smile to my face every time I put them on. They are imho the perfect set for vinyl sessions.

Who has moved up from 225s and what's your experience? The 225s are the sweet spot in the Grado lineup IME and you have to spend a lot more to do a

The SennGrado is a great upgrade, better than my RS2e IMO, if I had built it before getting RS2e I would never have gotten the RS2e, granted that the 3 SennGrado that I have built all sound different so you never know.

Just upgraded to the SR225e from the SR225 (non-i/e).  Really a stunning headphone for the price.  These e series 225s really are a drastic leap forward in tight, well defined bass, and Grado finally gets a healthy amount of bass too, while still maintaining their energy.  Pairing it up with an audioengine D1 and it's really quite the pair for sub $400 and very portable.  My Senn HD650 are starting to look at me with sad eyes.

Think the soundstage is a bit wider too, not quite as wide as my HD650s or AD700s, but it's to the point where I don't think it's a weakness like it used to be for Grados.  Metallica S&M really highlights the strengths of this, as the orchestral bits remain clearly placed, yet when the band hits, it maintains the Grado energy, but also with a very pleasing, tight, full bass impact.

They also "take EQ" well.  Many headphones fall apart when you try to EQ much of anything to them.  I give the Grados a tiny boost in the lowest bass frequencies (or more accurately pull all the others down and then use the amp to get them back to the right overall level) and pull a bit of 1K, which is where I have an in ear frequency resonance (meaning neutral cans to my ears have a slight peak at 1K).

Unamped they're great.  I really dig them straight out of my iPhone 6S with no amp.  But they also scale up really well when paired with a good portable (Audioengine D1) setup, or a more elaborate home system.

I am intending on moving up. I may even be only moving to the SR325e.

Initially I thought that I'd be paying more for posh headband, but I think that is actually might be worth it. Any improvement in sound will be welcome even if it is small. The SR325e has a little more bass than the 225, so that will obviously be welcome. However I think it might have a touch more highs as well so it might be negated.

The issue s that even a small audio upgrade is nice. An example. I used to use my PC on-board sound card. I bought a Meridian Explorer DAC. At first I thought it was only marginally better. However now I would not like to go back to the on-board sound. In all fairness to it though, it is stunning for motherboard integrated audio.

As I said in a previous post though, the 225 range never made more than four stars in a review. Whereas the 325 always takes five, unless you allow for some reviewers complaining about comfort. Personally I think the L-cushion is a masterstroke in comfort and for being cool. It's just a case of finding the right spot for the cups on the legs, by sliding up or down.

All other Grado SR receive *five* stars so potentially there is something the 225 are doing that reviewers do not like. I saw a What Hi-Fi review of the 225 saying it was great for classical. You need guarantees of more genre compatibility though.

I find it hard to choose between the 325e, RS2e, and the PS500e, because here is such little info available. The 500e I think has had its bass tamed a little so may now be something special. Original 500 owners were happy anyway. I think I lean closer to the other two choices though, but it's difficult to make an uninformed choice. It because there is such little pro-review info on the RS2e. What I am curious mainly about is how much clearer the RS2e may be, compared to the 325e.

Even the 225e (actually 225i with e-drivers) I have, occasionally pick out details in music I never heard before. That's what excites me about upgrading, along with clarity. That's what I don't know with the RS2e as not many have compared it with the 325e. If only the pro-reviewers would get moving and do reviews. I even wrote to What hi-Fi and told them about the surge of interest in the RS2e. Plus I mentioned the 225e has a nice controlled sound now.

Anyway if I ever do upgrade I will let this thread know, and maybe another. I had SR125i before the 225e, plus I owned the SR60 many years ago (and I loved those headphones). I also auditioned the SR60i and found that compelling and awesome value for money. I also auditioned the SR80i. I think I should be able to make a balanced account of the headphone I get next, having heard so many other Grado.

Shame you cant get to hear these other headphones furst, as everyone will have different opinions. Also depends on source and kit too.. Some may only play vinyl, or onky cds, etc.
Also kit....some use hifi amps, some portable amps, some no amp at all........some only use phones, cd pkayers, or the hifi amp headphone output ......its a minefield.
I have the grado 325i gold, and same as you the 225i with red dricers, bought this year......I would say the 225 are very good at most things, But the 325 does everything better.
Keep your eye open for a deal, .The 500 as you know is one up from 325, and some good prices cropping up lately.
The only problem I really have is when I use my headphones on my hifi schitt magni amp...Even on low gain theyre to loud....the 225 louder than the 325 ? Which is a shame.
