Ah, I know that's confusing indeed, but head fi have increase the possibility to show your set up, so, that's why its been wrote one after each other, pfff...

If you need new cable, check DIY forum or ask over there, I am quite happy with the stock, however it can be improved, but which direction is the question. Headphile headphile... artistry & design... headphone tweaks and modding, woodies, interconnects, Grado, Sennheiser, AKG, Beyer, woody, darth beyer, terminator v4, grado vixen and more... and MoonAudio Moon Audio offers the re-cabled GS1000, so, maybe they can sell you the cable alone so you can do the job, but me, no, cant do it and its quite tricky as well.
Once I have tried re-cabled GS1k and while the clarity, detail and soundstage/airness were supurb, they become to spiky on the top end. They were re-cabled with Equinox Stefan AudioArt Home

hi blackmore,

i see gs1000 cables in your sig.
are these DIY?
if possible, can you point me in the right place?

these bends, while not causing any noise to the sound, makes me worry about the GS1000i stock cable.

Dr,
the X can V3 makes a good combination with both low impedance cans. again, the denon sounded fuller than the grado with the V3 at the same level.

the signature spaciousness of the V3 stock tubes were made brighter with the Denon and smoother with the Grado. I can see using the V3 primarily with the Grado GS1000i for violin concertos, small ensemble chamber music and johnny mathis.

i find the Max better with the Denon AH-D7000.
the denon works better with a high gain amp like the max.

..more to come on tube amps

I'm taking my AH-D7000 to the Mid-Indiana meet on Saturday...there are going to be some really good amps making an appearance...my only regret is that my Denons will only have somewhere in the neighborhood of 150-175 hours by the time they arrive...

there's also going to be some regular gs1000 for comparison...

oh boy, just as you're now at a show, my friends came over with some interconnects and OMG, the Grado GS1000i sounded a lot different in the low end.

I disconnected my optical cables from the MacBook Pro and went with these Monsters straight to the Headroom Max as an analog only path.

41lkMMU8MpL._SS500_.jpg

the bass with rock on the Grado GS1000i was in lock steps with the Denon but with the spaciousness as before.
The Denon AH-D7000 did not show much if any difference from this switch of interconnects.

then we plug in his Kimber Kable, from his velvet bag. these 3m babies cost him over $250 some 2 or 3 years ago.
Think they now have more than a couple of other names occupying a crowded interconnect market. challenged by a place call monoprice.com that is selling gold plated cable and interconnects for a tiny fraction of these audiophile brands. sorry, i digressed.

anyway, the kimbers sounded not so much different over the $50 monsters and another 30 minutes with various sources confirmed that to me.
my friends disagreed.

so, after some 5 hours sounding off and eating/drinking, i write this fresh.
the grado had another 20 to 30 hours of work since i typed away earlier in the week. whether that had something to do with the new founded bass or was it the monsters is not a mystery to me.
it is the analog connection and the monsters.
we use stairway to heaven as guide and personally i must have listened to it some 300+ times, so i pretty much has it down cold. the monsters via analog gave the GS1000i convincing bass. jimmy page's delicious midway thru guitar solo is clear, intimate and john paul jones' bass is to the slight left makes for an almost there experience.
Off to the Denon AH-D7000, jimmy's guitar seemed to have been eaten up by the backdrops. i don't believe this is intended by andy jones at all. so, what is right? jimmy page up front or john paul jones' bass strongly engulfing? with each can, you get a different interpretation.
i would never know the answer. i was never at the studio or attended a zeppelin concert.

Still, once again, the Grado appears to have that real live sound. I am going to try wearing it all next week.

ok here is my impression from the meet...please don't take this the wrong way as i'm just trying to be frank...

there were some things that the gs1000 did better than the Denon, but overall the Denon had a more enjoyable sound...for monitoring purposes i'd take the Grado IF those were your only two choices...

but, and here's the bit that's gonna get me in trouble, i would never never never NEVER buy the gs1000 or gs1000i having owned both the PS-1 and HP-2...they're not in the same league...they just aren't...

the Denon AH-D2000 was closer to the D7000 than the gs1000 was to the PS-1 or HP-2...

I truly don't understand how anyone would buy the gs1000/gs1000i at their current price point...I believe, at minimum, Grado should reduce the msrp of the non-i version...I would much rather own an old model RS-1 or try the RS-1i than spend that much on a ho-hum (compared to other Grado) phone...

this is all just imho, but if you really do prefer the gs1000i (and have the means to do so) go for something in the PS or HP series...

cheers and happy listening

1st, did they have the HD800 at the place?

regarding the Grados, neither ps or hp are easy to get now as they are not current. the ps1000 is questionable to me as it looks like the GS1000i with an extra layer.

there is actually something in the Denon line, the AH-D1001K for close to $100 that some say sounds like the AH-D2000. If this were true, that's a ton less money and a fraction of the weight. i will be reporting on that one when i get my hands on a pair.
