Sorry to hear about your KSC51. How long is the JVC warranty? Perhaps they will exchange it? Do you have any idea how it broke? Do you think the wire detached, or the driver just gave out?
 
How much is the Sony XBA-1?
 
One thing I noticed with JVC headphones is that they can change dramatically with burn in. For example, my HAS600 was so bassy and treble deficient for several weeks until it finally got
enough burn in. Then it sounded much more neutral with closer to normal bass and much better highs and detail.

I'll have to try your max volume trick, cause today my right channel stopped working.  My Skullcrapper Jibs gave out in the right channel also, so I started taking the FXC51 to work to use.  I knew better, but I kept using them for almost two weeks in the warehouse and I tried to be careful, but stuff happens.
 
I gotta admit I really took a liking to their sound even without any EQ.  Maybe it was their frequency response that worked well with the ambient outside noises of my workplace.  I'll probably replace them.
 
Though I just got back from buying more Skullcrappers.
