I nominate HD600 as well, your best bet.  The only others I know of are the upper Hifimans, but they are IEMs.

Timbre is very important in a recording.
What do you like about the AKG? How would you compare the accuracy to a 701K?

I do like the fact that it is quite neutral and very detailed. It seems to be able to bring out all the small details of a record, and present in in a close-to-real way. Not far from what you would have heard if you were there in the recording studio.

No comparison.
The K1000 do run circles around the K701.

The K-702 does timbre surprisingly well out of my Burson HA-160. Honest opinion. Without the right amp, it is pale and malnourished.

To get an idea of what good timbre is, can somebody offer some info on how the M50 does it? Serious question, I have no other reference.
