My father has recently handed down his pair of Sennheiser HD 565 from 1997 and I love them to bits. However, before he gave them to me, I was originally planning to get a pair of HD 650's. So with that being said, is there a notable difference in sound, especially regarding warmth and bass? Before I received the HD 565, I primarily used the HD 598 and noticed a very nice increase in sound quality. Any help/ information will be highly appreciated.

I haven't heard the 565 but I own the 598 and the increase in sound quality and musical emotion is massive when you step up to the 650. If you are doubting the worth of spending $315 for the 650 then perhaps get in on that HD6XX drop on Massdrop. I think it's 200 bucks and essentially the same headphone as the 650 but with different materials and perhaps not with hand matched drivers.

Also what gear do you have to drive your headphones? If you don't have a decent amp then I'd say don't even worry about getting 650's as the sound you'll get out of it won't be worth the money you spent

I'm only running with the Schiit Fulla 2 at the minute so that may be a problem. The 598 to 565 were a sizable leap so i'm not sure whether to make the jump to the 650.

I'd say it'd be a good idea to get the 6xx and spend the extra hundred you save on a Magni 3 or a Vali.

the 650 is a noticeable upgrade from 598 but not sure about 565; you do need an amp for that though and magni 3 is a great amp for the headphone. Fulla 2 is not good enough in driving the HD650. Like @cossix said, you can save a couple bucks if you go with 6xx but the waiting is the trade off of the bargain price.

My friend told me that HD580 strikes a great balance between HD600 and HD650...How do you guys think?
I've heard the same thing occasionally

Browsed a few reviews. Seems like it's more similar to the HD580 tonally, so the HD650 should be tonally different.

As to whether that's an improvement - resists distortion better (assuming your amp isn't distorting or worse, clipping), stronger bass, more proportional imaging, etc - are audible, relevant, and significant enough for the additional expense to you, we can't answer that.

Yes and the funny things is that these old headphones are also divided into more revisions (usually early 600 ohm and later 300 ohm) and those early sound better than the lates.
I have a HD 540 reference 1 600ohm and HD 540 reference 2 300ohm each sounding different from each other but I love them both. I prefer them to the HD 600 which in itself is a good headphone. Going on to the HD 650, I cannot understand how so many people rave over it. To me it sounds thick, muddy and very little detail in the highs, I sold my pair.

Never heard the 650 but everything that comes after the 650 is the real problem.
