anyone think this is a good idea?  I think I can get the d2000 from around $200-230.  I've read that the sound is very different, but I don't think I'd mind.

I've seen suggestions for the d2000, akg701, dt 880/990, and hd 600 in this price range.  I'm having difficulty deciding which to pick.

I like watching movies, playing video games, listening to various types of music, but mostly electronica and dubstep.

Also, an amp won't be a problem.

The denon d2000 is awesome. It doesn't need an amp (although one wouldn't hurt) and has magnificent bass-clarity combination. It is extremely comfortable as well.
Don't get the akg701 since it is heavily dependent on a powerful amp. The dt880/990 and hd600 needs amps too to sound their bass (just not as powerful amps).

Denon D2000, $230 looks like the best price anywhere.
Everyone seems to like their D2000s (who own them)

Have you checked out the Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250-Ohm, I really like them.
On eBay, about $60-$65 cheaper then the Denon D2000
But they need an amplifier that can handle 250-Ohms well.

I was in your position a month ago, and I never regretted the upgrade! The D2000 does sound different from the AD700, the soundstage is slightly smaller, but still great for closed headphones. The details are incredible. As for lower prices, I got it from J&R for $200 on phone. Give them a call to check before you buy it somewhere else.

bump.  Anyone have any other opinions?  Also, does anyone know if I can get new d2000s for less than $230 anywhere?  I'm going to buy them soon.

Buy them used if you can, you'll be saving money over new and also they'll be already burnt in and sounding their best.

Awesome headphone.
