Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

I wonder why there is such a huge difference in weight between the three? (all without cables)
Mahogany 350g
Purpleheart 390g
Ebony 450g

Denon D series:
D2000 350g
D5000 370g
D7000 370g

I think this must be a mistake on the Massdrop site.

It’s not a mistake. When you look at it in grams it looks like a dramatic amount but in truth it’s not much.

If you look at it in ounces the difference is less than 3 ounces across all 3 variants.

With that said Ebony is VERY dense.....it’s twice as dense than most varieties of Mahogany from the charts I’ve seen

As beautiful are the wood cups are, I wish the edges of the cups had a slight fillet to prevent chips if something were to catch on to the sharp edge. It's very evident, especially with the lacquer finishing and the untreated wood on the inside.
I know the gap isn't very big but still, it would still look better aesthetically.
I not 100% certain but I think my first Denon d5000 had fillet edges where the 2nd brand new box wasn't and was immediately returned cos for this reason.

I have to agree, although I did tend to baby my Fostex when I had them. At least they’re better designed than the Audeze LCD wood rings, which crack if you look at them the wrong way. It’s one reason I held out for the Aluminium LCDs, and also why I switched from My TH-X00 to the ZMF Atticus (albeit mainly for the overall better sound, but build was a factor). Still, love and miss my TH-X00 mahogany - nothing I’ve heard before or since can do quality bass like Fostex.

I wonder if anyone has tried blocking the gap to improve isolation and sound leakage
Shoot silion into the crack ?

I remember reading it in this thread though that the gap is actually the port system itself, blocking it will ruin the sound.
Or more bass will come out.

Besides the x00 series using new gimbal and wooden earcups, what other changes were made that contributes to the sonic changes from the Denon D5000 or (TH600)
Do the d5000 and th600 use the same driver?
And with the increase denticity of the ebony cups, performing a Lawton audio mod won't make any sonic changes since in just increasing damping to the back of the drivers. Correct me if I'm wrong.
