Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

Which headphones have you heard?  If I've listened to any of the ones you mention, it may be easier for me to closer identify frequency differences relative to the headphones you have listened to, not named Denon and Fostex.

hd600, fidelio x2, grado (I don't think this should count), hd650, he-400i, he-560, lcd2, shure940, dt770-880-990, t70-t90-t1 that is all on top of my head. Maybe a couple more I can't recall for now. Some Audio-Technica, like msr7, m50, and sony's mdr-1r and mdr-1a.

Thanks for the list.  I would say the TH-X00 has more accentuated bass than the ones I listened to from your list, midrange it depends, and more smooth treble as well.  The TH-X00 is really a different sound, but comparing it at least to the LCD 2 (even though it's open-back) isn't too far off of a comparison, in my opinion.

That's good to hear. Thank you for the response! Well, as long as the midrange is not recessed, I have no complaint. I don't particularly like recessed midrange sound-signature.

I totally understand.  Hope you enjoy the TH-X00!

Get both sell the one you don't want. That's what I'll do if I live in the US.

That's good thinking.  Or purchase from a place that has a good return policy and return the one you don't want without needing to sell it.

TH-X00 vs DT1770PRO... tough choice... DT1770PRO is under $400 today... What do you think?

The TH-X00 has a smoother and better integrated frequency response looking at graphs.  FWIW.

They are completely different headphone one is leaning toward neutral professional studio (DT1770) other is toward masses and new audiophiles *(Fostex).

Trying professional gear and commercial stuff I have to say always go with pro. It will be more accurate and that's what I personally prefer. The TH900 was a wonderful headphone when I had it but lets be honest it never has been a true $1300 headphone. Now at $399 if this massdrop edition can come close to TH900 then we are talking.

So like other guy said get both and sell or return one you don't like. Massdrop does not accept returns so you will have to sell that one in case you are not happy with the way it sounds.

On a serious note I have the TH900 and have no plans to get these, though I'll get to audition then soon enough. Mainly an issue with comfort for me as I can notice the edges of my ears touching the cup even for the TH900. Also I expect the TH900 to be more refined and technically superior since it's their flagship. As for a TH600 owner you gotta wonder how they compare?

Lets just look from business point of view why would Fostex design a $399 that can match their $1300 Flagship TH900?.. It won't. Now at $399 I have no doubt it will be possibly closed back bargain of the year but I doubt it will match similar priced open back HD600-650.

I had TH900 and HD800 and both were fantastic but Sennheiser was more accurate. Hopefully I will get to audition the Fostex Massdrop headphone to get a better idea how it compares to the competition.
