Fostex TH900 MkII

Will the cables change the sound completely? Is it worth the increased price? So if I'm understanding this correctly: the MKII headphones themselves are exactly the same as the MKI?

The cables will be detachable so you can remove them and change them to other cables such as balanced ones if you wish, without having to mod it yourself like you would have to do with the MK1. They default detachable cable is the same type of copper cable as normal, just detachable, and can terminate to 4-Pin XLR or you can opt to balance these things. There's not much of a price difference in the two models now, like $200, and driver-wise they're the same - if you want to mod it or have detachable cables or have the MK1 then no use for the second model. For a new buyer if you can get it for like $150-200 over retail go for the MK2 to save time on your end, unless you enjoy modding or can get a good deal on the original :)

I was looking at these yesterday here in Tokyo.  The connectors are not `proprietary` - they are the same 2-pin design used by Fitear and Sennheiser, and so there are many many options for either off-the shelf cables or DIY.

Watch out for cable design. The show pair that i played with had quite stiff and heavy aftermarket cables and the connectors on one side kept falling out

If sponsors placing ads directly in threads becomes a thing, I think a lot of people, myself included, are going to get really annoyed.

Some people may find this helpful since it's not posted anywhere else.

Seems like the only change will be detachable cables. I prefer hardwired, the less connectors the better.
Connectors look like the Senn HD6xx ones.

This is good news for me, i will get a TH900 in near future my only concern was for that high price a fixed cable,
now when cable can be remplaced it is a joy, only downside now is a bit higher price.

Has TH-900 MK2 been released outside Japan,  Where can i buy them in europe on internet?

I have the TH-900 MKII but looking to swap out headphone cables to shorter, 3.5mm jacks for portable use.  Can I use the Sennheiser HD650 compatible cables?  By the way, the sound is unreal combined with Mojo. 6.3mm is awkward.

According to this site, you can use HD650 compatible cables.

I just ordered a pair of the Mk2s to go with my Mojo—glad you like them. I'm thinking of trying a 5ft Moon Audio Black Dragon cable with an Oyaide 3.5mm connector for the Mojo. (Can't decide whether to get a straight in or right-angle connector...)

Nice find. I called up Moon Audio and they were pretty sure it would work as well however they didn't have a demo unit to confirm. I'm going to go with the Black Dragon with the right angle connector. Looks cleaner. Silver Dragons might add too much brightness. In the mean time, I'm using the Cardas 6.3mm to 3.5mm to connect to the Mojo.

After looking at the way the removable cables have been implemented and the cost difference, I would get the Mk-I, install SMC connectors ($15), I think the gold connector looks nicer), and save $2-300.  Can also reuse the stock cable since its pretty good.

This is my TH-600 with the SMC connectors, very easy to do this mod

mmm......I have the TH 900. It is the best closed-back I have in my small collection and I am 90% sure of getting the MK IIs, if only for the removable cable/customized cable option. As it is, the stock cable of the TH 900 is just way too long for my on-the-go listening. My question to you guys with experience in recabling the TH 900, which third party cable should I go for? TIA.

Pretty happy with the Black Scorpion. And get it hardwired to your TH-900, the less connections the better.
