Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Just as I was about to pull the trigger on the TH-900, a Massdrop sale is on for AKG's K812 at $800. O.O

Anyone have both the TH-900 and AKG K812? If so, could you do a comparison? I mainly listen to modern pop (think Top 40) and electronic dance music.

My past headphones are the Sennheiser HD-650, Grado RS-1, Grado HP-1, and Sony MDR-CD300 for reference.

I don't have the K812. But if you listen to modern pop and EDM. The TH-900 is your headphone for sure.

I have both TH900 and K812.  Also the Senny 650.
The Fostex and AKG are better in many areas over the 650.  Powerful bass, clear vocals with fine instrument differentiation.
For the type of music you cited, you cannot go wrong picking either one.
The way I see it is that at $800 for the 812, it is clearly the one to pick right now.
If you can get a 900 for under 1000, I may suggest that instead for you.  The low to mid is just a tad stronger on the Fostex than the AKG, but I am picking hairs here.

Comfort wise, each can be worn for hours.

Heard a lot of bad things about the k812.
Like it is even brighter than the TH900.

Well, I just sent in a payment for a pair of TH-900's.

Hopefully it'll go through (had some issues with the bank debit transaction limit).

I went to a Socal head-fi meet a couple of years ago, and the TH-900 was definitely one of the few headphones that gave me a lasting impression. I hope buying it based on that impression was the right move. I'll post my impressions when I receive it.

I don't think you will regret it....congrats.

They are still one of the best out there.

Thank you. Pretty happy with the price I got for it, too. I did some haggling on ebay, and got it for a little under $1200 shipped, brand new. The Massdrops might go lower, but eh... I didn't want to wait, and I believe I have to pay tax and shipping for the Massdrops, too (since it's in San Fran, and I'm in Los Angeles).

TH900 on the Audio-gd Master 11 is top notch.

Any feeling of a slightly recessed midrange is gone! First time I have heard the TH900 sound so balanced.

Not that it was bad or anything before but the M11 has definitely improved what I am hearing from the TH900. They were sitting on their stand collecting dust ever since I got the HD800, but the M11 has made the TH900 a pleasure to listen to again and they have been getting a lot of head time lately

For sure. I think in this hobby we are getting the cell phone mentality - after one year the technology is old. New quality headphones will sound mostly the same with the only real differences being the target sound signature. So a 4 year old TH 900 can sound equally as good as a HE 1000 if you like the sound signature. Not to mention the price points required now to enter flagship territory is just off the charts LCD-4 at 4K, HE1000 at 3K.

I'm all for getting that last level of refinement, but those prices are starting to get beyond silly. At that point get decent speakers!

Sucks you have to spend $2,000 to get it to sound that good.

This is head-fi, home to oligarchs, dictators and otherpersons of "noble" lineage. $2000 is nothing. Launder some money here, sell some slaves there.
Easy-peasy-launder-greasy.

Yes, some people make far too much money. Wish I had that problem.

According to some people I know , anyone who spends in the range of $1K on HP's has no value for money & is crazy.

Seriously. "My hobbies are awesome, but yours are a waste of money!"
